I stared at Leo, waiting for the surge of magic. The sense of dishonesty and deception. Usually, when someone told a lie, it was immediately apparent. They didn’t need to have a tell. No twitch of the jaw or blink of an eye. My magic just picked up on it. But right now, as I watched Leo carefully, I felt nothing. My magic was calm, soothed almost.

“Please say that again,” I muttered, needing to hear it once more. If my magic couldn’t pick up on a lie, maybe I could because what he was saying made zero sense.

Leo looked at me earnestly, his dark blue eyes clear of deception. “You’re my fated mate.”

I waited…

And nothing. He was telling the truth. No matter how much I might want it to be a lie. Too stunned to formulate anything, I simply stared at him, but then I realized he was waiting for me to respond. “How is that possible? I’m not a wolf, Leo,” I said, trying to understand, to make sense of such an impossibility. He might be my tether, but how could I be his mate? Unless it was because he was one that I was the other.

A look of relief crossed Leo’s face, like he’d thought he might have to convince me. He still did. He nodded, leaning forward on the table. “That’s what I asked myself too. Honestly, I didn’t want to believe it.”

I arched a brow at that. Some of his strange behavior made a bit more sense now, especially if he’d been fighting it. Probably no different from the way I’d fought the fact he was my tether even after I’d drawn on his magic and strength when I’d faced off against the dark spirit. But that still didn’t explain everything.

“How do you know for sure?” I asked.

“I went to the pack elders, just before you arrived in town. I’d sensed something was coming for a while now, but I didn’t know what it was.”

The hairs on my arms stood on end. He’d sensed me? I thought back to the first day I’d arrived in town when he’d come into that diner and I’d felt his magic and mine trying to mingle together even as I rejected it. I hadn’t realized he’d felt my magic too.

“Then the first time I saw you…” Leo let his gaze rove over my face, my body.

A rush of heat went through me as I remembered the rage that had flared between us. Looking at him now, having seen another side of him, I knew I had made a snap judgment about his character.

“Anyway,” he said, his gaze growing intense. “The elders told me I needed to have an open heart and mind. I didn’t understand then what they truly meant. But now I know they wanted me to be open to who and what you are. They said it was fate.”

An open heart and mind. It seemed I needed that myself. I still didn’t know how to believe all this, until Leo and Dylan’s words, so similar, came back to me.
