“Shea Howell, age nineteen, graduated from Burkett High School with a stellar 2.5 GPA. SAT scores are average,” Jacob read from his computer. “Everything in his life seems incredibly average. He doesn’t stand out in any way whatsoever.”

They sat around the table in the conference room after Ryker, Chief Adakai, and Freddy had gone, trying to map out their game plan. Getting a name from Freddy was a solid get. It was helpful. But it still didn’t answer any of the questions floating around in Spenser’s mind. If anything, it only posed even more questions.

“After high school, he went to work as a cashier at a convenience store, hasn’t done any college work, and still lives at home with his parents,” Amanda added. “He’s also been cited for driving with a suspended license and a couple of minor possession charges. He took plea deals and has never done any time. Lots of community service and diversion programs.”

“Huh. Okay, well, did his path ever happen to cross with Herb Leary’s while he was waiting for his cases to be pleaded out?” Spenser asked.

“Unclear. But I doubt it,” Amanda replied. “He was at county while those cases got worked out. Unless Leary picked up some extra shifts that were off the books there, I don’t show that he’s ever worked at the county jail.”

“Okay, so no known connection between Shea and Herb,” Spenser said. “So, we go back to the connection being with Becky Leary.”

“Which is an obvious connection since he had her for a few classes when he was a student at Burkett High,” Jacob said.

“What was his drug of choice? What was he busted with?” Spenser asked.

“Uhhh… one moment,” Jacob said as his fingers flew over his keyboard. “Okay, it looks like he was cited for weed twice. From there, he seems to have graduated to meth.”

“That seems to be the natural progression for a lot of kids these days,” Amanda mused.

“True enough. Sadly,” Spenser said.

“So, why would he go from a former student to would-be killer of his former teacher’s husband?” Amanda asked.

“It’s a good question. That’s the million-dollar question,” Spenser replied. “And off-hand, I can only think of two reasons he would have done it. The first is that his familiarity with Becky Leary led him to feel more comfortable with breaking into her house to steal things to feed his addiction. And then, of course, things went sideways. The problem with that theory is what I mentioned before about the security footage being deleted.”

“Speaking of which, I looked into it like you asked,” Jacob said. “And yes, the footage was manually deleted. The system had been logged into with a password, so it doesn’t seem to be an electronic glitch.”

“Okay, so, that theory doesn’t seem to hold water,” Amanda said.

“Unless, of course, Becky Leary recognized Shea as the intruder and, for whatever reason, deleted the footage and has been stonewalling us to protect him,” Spenser offered. “I’ve known some teachers who are very protective of their students, past and present.
