Chapter 7: Caleb

I really didn’t want to get her involved, but after telling her the truth, I could see that telling her to leave wouldn’t be the answer. I looked into her eyes, noticing the sad look and the down casted gaze.

“I knew my dad was up to something, but I wasn’t sure what it was. How do you…know all this though?” she asked.

“Like I said, from photos and other footage. I’m sorry to be the one to break it to you. But if you want to know whether your father is a friend or foe, you need to talk to him yourself. But I’m not lying, Mary. And I will say that if you choose to cut ties with him, I’ll be here for you.”

“Why do you like me so much? Isn’t it easier to no get me involved?”

That was the honest truth of it. If I could just tell her to quit bothering me, to forget about me, to leave me be, I would do it in a heartbeat. But, I couldn’t.

I knew her father would use her as leverage against me, and I didn’t want that to happen. but there was also the fact that I didn’t want to lose her in the fallout if things got bad. I wasn’t sure if I liked her honesty. I never let anyone in like this, because I knew it would be bad and make me weak.

“Mary, I’m going to be honest with you. I don’t know why I’m doing his. It might be because I like you. It might be due to how I feel for you, or maybe it’s just me being a dipshit and protecting you for whatever reason. But, no matter what, I will protect you if you decide to side with us. I want you to know everything, or know nothing,” I said.

“What do you mean by the latter?”.

“If someone learns the truth about our MC––that we’re a gang in this town that is rivals with another gang that controls the drugs around here. What if they decide to just up and leave? We’d have to…kinda erase their memories,” I said.

“So, you’d make me forget.” She looked confused.

“Unfortunately, I would have to, Mary. I hate the idea, but I think it’s for the best if you decide to leave. I don’t want the cops involved. My father will make sure that doesn’t’ happen either. He’s more powerful than you think. I don’t like my dad, nor do I like his policies, but…he’s always been there for me, and he’s always given me protection. We’re a team. It’s natural.”

“But do you support killing people mindlessly?”

“No, Mary. I don’t like doing what I do. I want to stop., But the only way to stop it is to get rid of the Red Skulls. And if you run off and tell your dad, that could put me in danger. Either way, you’re giving up one side for the other, and you need to decide now. Will you choose the father who never loved you, or the boy with the feelings he doesn’t even understand.
