CHAPTER SEVEN

– WINDSOR –

“Linnette,” I snap her name a little louder than I like but I’m pissed she just ran out of the house the way she did.

The door to her room is open and it makes my heart race with the thought something might be wrong. Romy is standing in the middle of the wide-open space and there’s not one personal object in sight.

“She’s not here. She left a few minutes before you got here,” Romy says and crosses his arms in front of his chest.

My fingers curl into fists. “Mind telling me why you didn’t stop her from leaving? Because your whole expression and those words lets me know you did in fact see her.”

“Do you even know who she is?” he fires back.

“Of course I do. Well, as much as you can know a person in a few days, but we talked a lot last night and some more this morning. We’re just starting out, okay? What’s your point?”

“My point.” Romy takes a seat in the chair in the corner. “She’s a Lawson.”

“I know what her last name is, I introduced you to her myself, Romy.” An impatience sigh rips from me.

“She’s related to the hotel chain owner in Vegas. Now does it ring a bell? Pretty sure she threw the fact in my face she also owns at least one hotel herself.”

She’s related to Broke Lawson? Successful businessman who is also a biker in an MC but has an impressive chain of hotels? A slow smile spreads my face.

“That makes perfect sense,” I muse. “She works but donates her pay because she doesn’t need it. She doesn’t care about money.”

“You know what she does care about?” Romy quips.

“Well?” I hold my hands slightly away from my body, wondering what the hell he’s talking about.

“You let Cliff buy her undies and other stuff. You know, private delicate matters women think differently about. Especially when you whisk them away and one might wonder how many times you’ve done so when everything goes as easily and smooth…as if you’ve done it many times and it’s a standard, as if she doesn’t matter and is like a load of other women, thing.”

“Fuck,” I mutter and sink down onto the bed. “I didn’t think. I just…I’ve never asked Cliff to pick up clothes for a woman before, because none have spent the night. I texted him a specific list of items and included pictures. I picked out every single item myself.”

Romy chuckles. “Yeah, and none of that is creepy. You have to see it from a woman’s perspective. Though, it might have been what sent her running but there was definitely more going on. She rambled about stuff that didn’t make sense but everything about her gave me the impression she’s doing it to somehow protect you. Even her last sentence to me was to make sure I watch out for you. Not for Emmitt because he would screw up again. What did you tell her about Emmitt?”

“Most of it,” I muse.
