FOURTEEN

“Miss Eckhart, have you ever been fascinated with fire?” the stern woman sitting across from Delta asked accusingly. Half-moon spectacles were balanced on her nose, and her eyebrows were drawn taught by the tight bun on top of her head.

“Yes, since I was a child and my father was a fire-fighter,” Delta answered knowing the answer could be construed to implicate her.

“Have you ever set a fire?”

Delta smiled wryly. “Look, let me do us both a favor and cut to the chase. I know what you’re doing. You’re trying to assess whether or not I have pyro tendencies. Well, I can assure you I don’t. I’ve always been fascinated at the speed with which a fire can turn, and how to outsmart it. I’ve never been fascinated by the death and havoc it causes. I didn’t set the fire in my apartment. You can check my file; I’ve never shown any tendencies in that direction.”

Half-moon spectacles were lowered to reveal narrowed eyes under a cocked brow.

Delta held up her hand. “Before you say it, I know there is a first time for everything. But I can assure you I didn’t do it, and at least give me some credit. If I started the fire, I wouldn’t have used something as obvious as fuel in the center of the living room. I’m a firefighter; I can think of much more inventive ways.”

“Miss Eckhart, I understand you’re bothered by this investigation, but it is necessary. Your cooperation would be appreciated.”

“I am cooperating. I’ve sat here for the last hour explaining what happened that morning, and if after the past hour you still think I set the fire, I don’t think there is anything I can do to convince you otherwise.”

“I never said you set…”

“You didn’t have to. The fact that I’m being formally interviewed by the head arson investigator says it all.”

The bell rang out loudly, and Delta breathed a huge sigh of relief. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got a fire to put out!”

Delta shoved the chair back and stood up. After donning her gear and jumping into the truck, she breathed deeply a few times to calm herself. She needed her full focus before stepping into the fire.

For the past week, she had been doing a lot of deep breathing, Delta thought as the truck wailed out of the station. Between her restless nights thinking about Neal and worrying over the arson investigation, restful sleep had been scarce.

Since she ran out on Neal after their kiss, they had come to what Delta thought of as silent stale-mate. They were friendly but not too friendly. All physical contact had ceased, and Neal rarely looked her in the eye, something that bothered her endlessly. She felt attracted to Neal: to his personality, his smile, and the way she felt when he was around. She just didn’t know how she was going to stop her body from jumping to flight mode whenever Neal touched her.

“We’re here,” Lieutenant Kays said as the truck stopped in the middle of Cape Fear Memorial Bridge.
