CHAPTER

TEN

IVY

I’ve been left alone for a week now. No Cleavemores, no Bryce, and even the students in my classes again give me a wide berth. I’ve washed their touches off my body more than I can count, yet I still feel the Kings of Cleavemore like I’m just another thing they own. I have never been more lonely.

I don’t have friends. The few girls I knew before attending prep school dropped me many years ago. My mother’s friend Shayna is the only person left in the world who loves me.

I didn’t want to drive my car to the date with Bryce because I was too ashamed for him to see my vehicle. However, that’s no issue now as I take the turns into downtown, where the Silver Seashell has been in business longer than I can remember.

My mother loved to dance, and stripping was her way of expressing herself. Other people would be disgusted with her choices, but I never saw it as something to be ashamed of. She picked it up after my dad passed to help make ends meet and wound up enjoying herself.

Mom never had a problem with being sexy. She liked using her sensuality. It made her happy while also putting food on the table. Not everyone is cut out to be a prima ballerina or backup dancer for celebrities, but she was lucky to make dancing her work.

I never blamed Mom for her choices, and I certainly don’t now that her old coworkers are the only family I have left. I often sat in the dressing room while Mom was on stage, the other girls taking up the caring mantle until her set was complete. Before coming to Cleavemore, several of their daughters were my friends.

It’s been too long since I’ve been back, and I know a mountain of shit awaits me. Those still remaining have every right to be mad, but I hope that won’t prevent them from giving me some advice. I also have a peace offering for my mother’s very best friend, Shayna. Something my mother would want her to have.

The necklace hangs from the rearview mirror, catching my eye in the dying sun. My mom didn’t have much, but Shayna gave her the lily pendant to match her stage name. She would want her friend to have it back.

I pull into the parking lot and cut off the engine. I didn’t expect this journey to hit me so hard, but the neon lights of the Silver Seashell beckon and remind me of everything I’ve lost. The tears threaten to fall, and I snatch up the necklace and exit the beat-up Chevy before they succeed.

The heavy bass from the current track vibrates around me as I push open the door and step into the foyer.

“Lilypad, what are you doing here?” Roger, the security guard, says in surprise as he opens his arms for a hug.

“Hey, Rog. I wanted to come see everyone,” I say as I fall into his arms.

Roger is around fifty years old and has worked here since I was a little girl.
