* * * *

The next morning we were meeting Alice, the mother of Shely’s

son, her attorney, and ours, Daran Sullivan. My mate was freaking out

at seeing his ex-girlfriend after what had happened. Apparently they’d

not seen each other since the funeral several months ago, and she

hadn’t been all over him then about Brian’s death being his fault. He

assumed it was simply shock, but from my experience, people lashed

out more the moment tragedy strikes.

Which was why I found this bit of information curious.

“Hi, I wanted to talk to you real quick before we go in the

conference room,” Daran said quietly and ushered us into his office. I

raised an eyebrow and cursed when I heard his thoughts. “Did you

know Ms. Heald has a live-in boyfriend?”

“Yeah, Karl, but I didn’t know they moved in together.” Shely

groaned. “He’s here? I guess she needed the moral support.”

“And she’s been on prescription something,” Daran replied,

annoyance in his tone. “At least I hope someone qualified prescribed

whatever she’s on.”

“Alice isn’t one to take pills for practically anything,” Shely said

slowly as if processing this new bit of information.

“Well, I wanted to warn you before we went in there.” We nodded

that we understood, and he led us into the conference room. It was

hard not to gasp at the sight before us. Saying Alice was on some drug

was an understatement as she seemed more comatose than awake. I

got that she was grieving and in lots of pain…but damn, woman! At

least run a brush through your hair.

“Alice?” Shely whispered, and I heard from his thoughts that

something was really wrong since he knew she’d never be caught

dead going out in public looking like that. What I’d seen in his mind

was a vibrant, well-put-together woman who took pride in her

appearance. The funny thing was I didn’t hear shit in her mind, just static. What the fuck?

“Please do not address my client directly, Lieutenant Carmichael,”

her attorney sneered. Oh, so that’s how we were going to play this

game. Good, then I wouldn’t have to play the sweet and innocent

partner if they were mean to Shely.

“And you are?” I asked, raising an eyebrow and looking him over

as if he was something I’d stepped in. Pretty damn accurate

assessment actually. He smelled funky.

“You first,” he practically snarled at me. I felt a flare of power.

BINGO! He wasn’t human, and I’d guess the other guy wasn’t either,

from the way they smelled. And it wasn’t normal magic I was

smelling, it was evil magic.

“Paul Smith, Shely’s partner,” I answered sweetly, batting my

eyelashes at him.

“Oh, another fag.” Karl snorted and threw his hands in the air.

Well, the assumption was that this was Karl since he didn’t have the

manners to introduce himself. Or I wasn’t worth the effort. Either

way, rude. “Great, you want to kill a teenager, too? Maybe that’s how

you have fun on the weekends?”

“Control your client’s boyfriend,” Daran snapped at the other

attorney before I could say anything. Fuck this shit. Shely started to

shake, and I wanted us to get out of here for his sake. Me? I was

always up with bitch smacking some homophobe, but this wasn’t the

time or place.
