Chapter 12

Lexi

Beep, beep, beep . . . my eyes feel heavy.

I try to open them as best as I can.

“Lexi? Come back to me, please,” I hear.

“Dan?” I croak.

Then I hear him mumbling something.

“Dan,” I whisper.

“I’m right here, baby. You’re going to be OK.”

Just then I recall my brakes gave out when I was driving.

“My brakes failed,” I say.

“I know, baby, and we will figure that out after you recover. You scared the shit out of me,” he sighs. He grabs my hand and kisses the top. I look into his worried eyes.

The vision I had is still as clear as day, but I do my best to push it to the back of my head.

“I’m sorry I frightened you.”

“Stop saying you’re sorry. I’ll go get the doctor.”

“Wait! Dan, stay. Please don’t leave.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” he says and I nod.

“Don’t call them back in just yet.” I beg.

“I had a flashback. I remember a little bit of what happened to me.”

His eyes go wide.

“Tell me what you saw.”

So I tell him everything about the slave farm and what I recall. All the way up to how Pete tried to save me and how he died.

“How did you escape? Is Ryder still alive?”

“That’s the thing, Dan. The man who attacked me in the alley was Ryder. I just didn’t know it at the time. And now I can’t get the vision of Pete lying in a pile of his own blood out of my head.”

Tears are rolling down my face as the guilt continues to eat me alive.

“Shit, babe . . . I am so sorry.”

He looks stressed out, so I grab his hand and kiss it.

He sighs and pulls my hand to his heart. He looks me in the eyes, and says, “Lexi, I think I’m falling in love with you.”

My eyes widen and my mouth opens slightly.

“You are?” I smile.

“I am. When I saw you fly off the road my heart stopped. The thought of living a day without seeing your beautiful face or listening to that smart mouth almost sent me completely over the edge. You make me whole, Lexi.”

My lip starts trembling and I feel like I’m about to lose it. His eyes soften.

“Dan, I care about you too,” I smile.

He leans over and starts kissing my lips softly.

“I will never let anyone hurt you again.” He says.

I nod and squeeze his hand gratefully.

“On that note, I think someone tampered with your brakes.”

“I think so too,” I agree.

“Tammy.” We say at the same time and I exhale and lean my head back.

“Lexi, I will get to the bottom of this, OK?”

I shake my head and hug him tight.

“Ryder is still out there,” I sigh. “He may have someone working for him. He has an army of men, Dan.”

“Lexi, we will figure this all out I promise,” he says with certainty in his tone.

Feeling my head start to throb he calls the doctor in to give me some medication, which makes me tired and in minutes I’m falling into a deep slumber.
