CHAPTER 12

I take a seat on a bar stool. The same bartender is there, polishing glasses with a worn cloth. She’s wearing a red minidress so tight that her butt looks like it’s trying to escape. Ditto her gigantic breasts.

“What’ll you have?” she demands.

“Hi, Layla. Don’t worry. I’m not going to order my usual.”

“What’s your usual?”

“You know, what I had the last time I was here.”

She shakes his head. “Nope. Your face doesn’t ring a bell. So, what’ll you have?”

“What do you mean, my face doesn’t ring a bell? How could you have forgotten me? Your bar changed my life.”

“If I had a nickel for every time somebody’s said this bar has changed their life, I’d have five cents,” she says.

I blink. “But that means you would have only heard it once,” I say.

“Exactly. What’ll you have?”

“Actually, I didn’t come in to drink this time. Or to pick up strange men, for that matter. I changed my mind about changing my life and went back to my old life. So, I’m not drinking alcohol, but I’ve learned some things, and I want to share them with you.”

“Listen lady, the rules of the bar are, if you don’t drink, you can’t share nada. So, what’ll you have?”

“Iced tea?”

Layla grabs a glass and pours iced tea into it. “No problem,” she says and hands me the glass.

“I can’t believe that you don’t remember who I am. I’m the one who drank the tequila shot.”

“Oh! The woman who drank the tequila shot! Why didn’t you say so before?”

“So you remember me?”

“Nope. Is that all? Because I have inventory to do.”

Is that all? All of a sudden, I wonder if I really do have wisdom to share with a big-boobed bartender. Perhaps I don’t have any answers. Perhaps she has all the answers, after all, and all I know is that I enjoy chemical engineering, and tequila makes me stupid.

“I don’t understand about love,” I say, voicing what I don’t know instead of giving advice.

“Nobody understands about love. That’s why I do a bang-up business. The more liquored up a person gets, the more they understand about love.”

“But that’s counterintuitive,” I say. “If they’re drunk, they can’t think clearly.”

“Exactly.”

“I was married,” I say. “Have you ever been married?”

“I’m married to my work, or at least I was married to my work.” She shoots a glance at a man sitting in the corner. He looks a lot like Ryan Gosling, except his hair is longer, and he has a neck tattoo.

“Are you married to that guy?” I whisper. For some reason, I’m scared for him to hear me.

“Are you out of your mind,” she screeches. “That jerk? That’s the a-hole that’s trying to take my bar out from under me.”

Her voice cracks, and I spot a tear at the corner of her eye. I want to give her encouragement, tell her that happy endings exist, but I’m not altogether sure they do.

So, I lie.

“Have you tried making a wish at the fountain?” I ask her.

“The
