Chapter 15

Brad

I could have spent the entire day in bed, but eventually, nature called. I disentangled myself from Teddy’s wonderous arms and made a quick trip to the bathroom. Relieving myself, I checked the mirror for any signs of aging.

I was forty-three, not as young as I used to be. I kept myself in shape, but there were still things I was unable to do that came easily just a decade ago. I couldn’t pull all-nighters like I used to. I couldn’t eat crap and not have it affect me. I couldn’t mix beer and hard liquor on a legendary bender without feeling the consequences.

I didn’t think Teddy would mind, though. If I read the room correctly, she had been more than satisfied by our recent connection. I didn’t feel even remotely tired, and after washing my hands, I walked back into the guest bedroom playfully.

“I’m starving,” I said, reaching for my pants.

“Hi Starving, I’m Teddy,” she teased, pulling the covers up over her chest.

“Why don’t I make you something?” I asked, leaving my shirt where it was on the corner of the bed.

She hunted for her own clothes in the folds of fabric surrounding her legs. I scooped up my own T-shirt and handed it to her. Call me crazy, but I wasn’t eager to get her back into her pants. Neither of us had any pressing engagements, and I only needed a brief interlude before I would be ready to go again.

She accepted it from me with a smile, looping her arms through the sleeves and her head through the neck hole. Tugging her hair back into a ponytail with a hair band that came out of nowhere, she rose to her knees. I extended a hand to help her out of the bed, squeezing her sideways before leading the way out the door.

The house seemed somehow more alive with her in it. What had been cold and clinical just moments before felt warm and comfortable. I appreciated the sofa and the art work much more than I usually did, a fact that struck me as funny.

“That’s a really nice sofa.” I pointed it out.

She gave me a quizzical look. “Are you drunk?”

“Maybe,” I responded.

It wasn’t often that I allowed myself to be silly. I was usually so focused on making sure my businesses were running at optimal velocity, that all my legal and tax considerations were covered and that I had time to make my next meeting. This abundance of energy and joy was new, but I rolled with it. If Teddy thought I was being goofy, I would make it up to her.

She didn’t pull away, though. Instead, she reached for my hand and wove her fingers in between mine. “I can think of a great way to test out the sofa.” She brought our intertwined hands to her lips and kissed my knuckles.

“I’m going to hold you to that,” I promised.

“You know, I am a bit hungry,” she belatedly admitted.

“How does a sandwich sound?” I asked.
