Changing Harmonies

I made a wish on the night of January 1, 2018, that the year would be filled with hope, joy, and beautiful opportunities. January was a great month for me. I found myself in San Antonio, back where it all began, thanks to the support of a local talent agent, Annette, I’ve known since I was little. She’d believed in me as a singer and performer, when I was young and unknown, and she’d always booked me around town whenever she could. She was so proud of how far I’d come. Having her in my life was such a blessing. It was so special to have family friends around me, who were there for me before and after my success in Fifth Harmony.

It meant a lot to me when I heard that she’d arranged for me to perform as part of the city’s Tricentennial celebration. I’d be singing with the world-renowned opera singer Plácido Domingo—known for his role alongside Luciano Pavarotti and José Carreras in the classical music supergroup the Three Tenors—plus a 64-piece orchestra. My family and I couldn’t believe all of this was happening in my hometown, making it all the sweeter. It felt like my journey had come full circle once again.

Now I had to prepare, and fast. There wasn’t much time before the show. And I was in Mexico City with the group on a promo tour. Mr. Domingo had asked me to be ready to sing “Bésame Mucho” with him, and although I knew this classic song, I didn’t have it memorized. So first I listened to it on repeat until I had it down. The night before I flew to San Antonio, I did a fitting with our stylist, who helped me to find just the right dress. I tried on several options, and then I slid on a beautiful white gown with a long train and sparkles sewn into the fabric. It was immediately clear this was the perfect one.

I wasn’t able to leave the group for long, so I flew into San Antonio the day before my duet with Mr. Domingo. I was always happy for any time with my parents, and my dad took me out to eat at one of my favorite spots before driving me to rehearsal at one of the most beautiful churches in the city. I was so nervous. I had sung a bit of opera around town when I was younger. I loved the music from The Phantom of the Opera, as well as Luciano Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli. It was an honor to be singing with Mr. Domingo.

After practicing with Mr. Domingo, I rehearsed the second song I would sing, just with the orchestra. It had always been a dream of mine to sing backed by classical musicians, but I’d never had the chance before this point. I loved how it felt different from my normal experience of singing—the sound was so grand and beautiful. I could see my dad tearing up from where he was watching, and when we finished, the conductor was so gracious.
