Hiring the Right Talents and Skills

David Ajemian loves his job. As a managing director of Citi Private Bank in Beverly Hills, he is responsible for heading the private bank team in addition to leading the bank’s recruiting efforts at USC. If you aren’t familiar with the term private banking, it represents banking, investments, and other financial services provided to ultra high-net-worth individuals and families (wealth management is actually a subset of private banking). David is a great friend to the cause of helping students find the right job after college and recognizes the importance of hiring people with the right talents and skills. When I asked him about this particular part of a right fit—connecting talents and skills to the Success Factors of the job—he said that he looks for candidates “who have a global citizen mind-set and an abundance of never-ending curiosity and willingness to learn.”

One of the college students he recognized as a right fit was Annie Tung. Annie met David when he spoke to my class about the field of private banking and why he loves his job. His message and information resonated with Annie, and she followed up with David for an informational interview. She then applied to and was hired for an internship, which led her to a full-time job offer after graduation. Like David, Annie loves her job, and cites “positivity and being intellectually curious” as talents she has drawn on to be successful in her role. “In my two years at Citi, not only have I had the opportunity to learn from three different teams (banking, investments, and lending), but I’ve also had the opportunity to work closely with colleagues from different functions and with diverse backgrounds and experiences. This job has given me hands-on experience and exposure to clients, as well as opportunities to develop skills that take advantage of who I am as an individual.”

When it comes to hiring people, David feels the following traits separate the right-fit candidates (you might recognize some of these words from the talent word cloud in chapter 3): “a high emotional quotient, Presence (with a capital P), patience, persistence, perseverance, adaptability, curiosity, and a willingness to never stop learning, evolving, and developing.”

Assessing how your own talents and skills will support and facilitate a successful job performance in a specific role is key to being rewarded for your Functional Value. It’s a necessary part of creating the “right light” in order to shine.
