“There’s no tragedy in life like the death of a child. Things never get back to the way they were.”

— DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER

CHAPTER SEVEN

When a friend or classmate dies

Children are not supposed to die. When they do, it’s a shock for everyone involved. The reality is that sometimes children do die. When a classmate or friend dies, a child is profoundly impacted. Children feel most in tune and connected with children their own age. There is a strong sense of “we are in this together” and “what happens to you often happens to me.” If she was close to the classmate who died, the child will feel a deep sense of loss. If she was not close, she will be curious and wonder why—and possibly take on fears of dying in the same way. Some children who experience the loss of a peer feel as if the foundation of their world is altered. Where they once felt safe, they no longer do. Usually, schools will offer grief support to students, but it’s important to provide extra support at home and to watch for signs that a child might need extra help addressing her grief.
