Once they were locked inside, Detective Torres headed back to the hotel to retrieve their things. Kate sat in a chair, her knees pulled close to her chest.

Alex handed DJ her phone. “Maybe you can use that to lure them somewhere.”

“That’s not a bad—” His phone interrupted him, and he answered as he walked away down the hall.

Kate jumped up and pulled out flour, butter, sugar, and all the other ingredients to make cookies. Alex didn’t dissuade her. Warm gooey cookies were exactly what he needed, and baking would give her something to do, calm her.

DJ rushed back up the hall, his eyes wide. “An agent is on his way over.”

“Agent?” Alex pulled a soda out of the refrigerator.

DJ nodded. “FBI. Kidnapping. Crossing state lines. That’s their jurisdiction.”
