Chapter 4

His phone rang. Murray grabbed it, noting automatically it was an unfamiliar number. “Yes?” he said, running a hand through his still damp hair.

“Hi. Is Antonio there?” An unfamiliar female voice asked. Something heavy landed in his gut. This was his landline, and someone was looking for Antonio. He fumbled with the phone.

“Um, no.”

“Oh, I’m sorry.” The woman sounded truly regretful. Who was she, anyway? “Is he at work?”

Murray closed his eyes and rubbed his forehead. Calm down, he ordered himself. He lives with you. Everyone is going to know that. You knew that when you invited him here. He tried to focus on the phone again.

“No, he is done with work for today.” Antonio’s schedule was erratic and depended on how many classes he had. He was home when Murray returned an hour ago. He was in the kitchen, preparing dinner. Before Murray went back to shower, Antonio yelled that he was going out for a run and that he would be back for them to eat together.

“No, he is outside running,” he answered. “I can tell him when he comes back—” A sound of a door opening and closing interrupted him. Murray turned around to see Antonio coming in. He smiled at Murray, flushed and slightly out of breath. A prickle of desire traveled up his spine.

“Hold on,” he said, “he just came in.” Without warning, he stalked over to Antonio and slapped the phone in his hand, ignoring Antonio’s surprised look. “It’s for you.”

Antonio still seemed confused. Murray couldn’t blame him. He was too abrupt. Still he was left with no recourse but to take the phone. “Yes? Oh, hi, Mom.”

Murray jerked as he heard that. He swallowed uneasily and wandered to the kitchen. He could still hear the murmur of Antonio’s voice from there. He liked that voice, but was uneasy about the implications of that call. He sighed and leaned on the counter. He had never spent much time in the kitchen, and it showed. Now his counters were filled with pots and specialty pans. There was actual food in his fridge. A gleaming new implement sat on the counter, taunting him with its existence. He wasn’t living alone anymore, his mate lived with him. And his mate was a man. He scrubbed his face in desperation. More than a week has passed. He thought he was dealing with it well. It was frighteningly easy how they fit together. Murray liked Antonio, he really did. He groaned and waited.

“Hey,” Antonio said, pausing in the door to the kitchen. “You okay? “

Murray shrugged. “That was your mother?”

“Yes. She and my father wanted to talk to me.”

“You gave them this number.”

He thought he saw Antonio’s face close off. “They are my parents. They have my cell, and my number on the job. Of course I gave them the number.”

“No, it’s not a problem.” Murray shifted uneasily. “Just…do they know about me? “

“They know I’m living with someone,” Antonio answered carefully. “It’s not like I can actually hide that, Murray.
