Chapter Sixteen

Joss

Juni seems brighter today. I kept her home from school the last few days, making sure she is doing okay both mentally and physically. So far, she hasn’t shown any signs, but I did a quick online search and they said that trauma victims can take a while to show signs of PTSD, or even a trigger can set things off, so I have been keeping a close eye on her.

Her school were super supportive with me keeping her home, even sending schoolwork home for her to do, but like every teenager out there, she whined about having to do it, but I refuse to let her fall behind.

“Oh, this is cute.” Her voice comes from the other side of the rail filled with clothes.

We are at some new and hip shop, according to my daughter. I step over to her and see she is holding up a matching black and white, plaid skirt and blazer. Smiling, I take it from her to check the price tag, and I am shocked how cheap it is, yet it is made well.

“You want this?” I ask, making her smile wide.

“Really?” I nod to her question.

She lets out a squeal of delight, gaining the attention of some people around us, then she is rifling through the rack for her size.

I smile at seeing her happy. I just hope and pray that it stays there. Her happiness is what I live for. To see her happy in life, to succeed in what she wants.

We each deserve to get what we want.

Speaking of wanting things, Finan’s handsome face pops into my head. I have been dodging his calls and texts since he left the morning after Juni was brought home. I needed time to wrap my head around things; Juni being home and safe. Him being younger than me, and the possibility that he could dump me at any time.

It’s not only me who will be hurt, but it will also be Juni. She talks about him, wanting to know how much I like him, how hot he is. Damn teenage hormones.

I blow off her questions about him not spending time with us, getting to know her, by saying that he is working. I can’t bring myself to talk to my teenage daughter about my issues with the age gap.

She is older than her age, I know, but maybe it’s time to talk to her about how things are. I mean, she needs to understand that not everything is a fairytale when it comes to relationships.

She likes watching all those tween movies that are filled with sweet love, mixed with a little teen drama and angst.

Maybe I need to approach this subject rather than dodging it.

We shop a little more, then pay for the outfit with some accessories to go with it. Next up is shoes, then we are booked in for a mani-pedi. Mother-daughter time.

“What do you say we grab something to eat before we go to the salon?” I nudge Juni with my shoulder.
