The Fair Play Initiative

Fair Play for Women in Northern Ireland was established in February 1996 by Baroness Denton, then Minister for the Economy. Its remit was to encourage women to realise their lull potential in all areas of public and economic life, including non-traditional areas of training and employment. Initiatives (although not geared solely to this area) included, in 1997, two evenings under the title If I Can, You Can, presenting young women from local schools with the opportunity to meet successful women from the private, public and NGO sectors, including non-traditionally employed women. A poster was produced in conjunction with the T&EA for use on these evenings and distributed to schools. Those attending were accompanied by careers teachers, and careers officers from the T&EA gave advice and information. Evenings were followed by follow-up work placements, shadowing some of the speakers. Also in 1997, a Fair Means More competition was held, rewarding smaller companies whose working practices supported employees in scientific, engineering and technological posts, and which had caring responsibilities.

Working through four sub-groups, Fair Play identified and took action on topics relevant to its aims. However, unable to improve on similar work being undertaken in Northern Ireland, it has now completed its work.
