“That’s how you dig it up,” I said. “You don’t use a shovel, because that might damage it. You have to be gentle, with the brush.”

Sky blinked at me. His eyes were still blue, even though he was now a toddler. But his hair was dirty blonde; he was a perfect mix of both his fathers.

We had decided to start him on archaeology early. Of course, he would be allowed to do whatever he wanted to do with his life. But naturally, Stephen and I were enthusiastic about sharing our passions.

And I was learning a lot about archaeology thanks to my work at Pinewood, with a professor who was mentoring me with my Sky Meadows wolves project. Because it was a smaller program with lots of resources, I was able to customize my program of study and get started on my research project early on, because I already had experience with the site. That meant I’d be able to graduate early and get started on my career in earnest.

I heard the distinctive sound of a key turning in the lock. Stephen was home. He was returning from the conference, where we had presented the paper; I had come home a couple days early because I had classes and work, and we didn’t want to waste the money we were paying for Sky’s daycare. Pinewood College, being a shifter school in a semi-rural area, had a nice little daycare for students and faculty. He was already starting to make friends and ask for playdates.

“I’ve got big news,” said Stephen, a wide grin on his face. He dropped his bags and strode over to where I was sitting on the floor with Sky.

“Yeah?”

He sat down next to us, crossing his legs. Sky immediately crawled onto his lap, hugging him. “Daddy!”

“Hey, Sky.” He nuzzled the child’s head and kissed him on the forehead. My heart melted, as it always did when I saw Stephen sharing affection with Sky.

He arranged Sky on his lap. “Monica made an announcement.”

I had a feeling I knew what he was talking about. “What is it?”

“I’m going to be taking over as department chair in the school year after this one! It’s official and it’s really happening!”

“Oh my gosh! I knew she had talked about it with you, but I didn’t realize it was a done deal already.” I scooted closer to him to hug him tightly and kiss him on the cheek.

“She told me to send her love to you and Sky, by the way.”

I smiled and snuggled close to him so I could feel his warmth and kiss Sky on the forehead. I was so glad that we no longer had to hide our relationship, now that I had graduated. The rest of the department had sent us wedding gifts, and because we were obviously happy together and had a family, no one had said anything about the fact that Sky had clearly been born during the spring semester.

It was a bullet dodged, and for that, I was glad.
