Chapter Ten

Amazed she’d driven this far, tired as she was, Marilyn yawned and watched Hudson open the gate to his property.

When he returned to his truck, she put her car in gear and followed him up a dirt road toward a small log home. Barking joyfully, two dogs ran alongside his vehicle.

They parked the vehicles side by side, and she got out and breathed in the crisp clean air. The effect boosted her energy. Glancing up took her next breath away. The night sky held an uncountable number of stars, like diamonds casually tossed across the heavens from horizon to horizon. On her right, the soft glow of an artificial light could be seen far off across the prairie. She guessed the infamous Buck lived there.

“It’s beautiful. And so quiet.” She whispered the words as if the sound might intrude on the magical setting.

“Enjoy the silence while you can. The frogs on the pond ought to be starting up any minute, serenading one another. They can be a noisy lot. But everything has its season. There won’t be many nights of their music left to enjoy before a cold snap sends them hibernating for the winter.”

Marilyn wasn’t sure how far they’d driven, but compared to hers, Hudson’s place felt like a parallel universe. As she took it all in, a shiver raised the hair on the nape of her neck, marring the beauty of the moment. She was standing in the dark with PI Kincaid because back in her universe her house had been set on fire.

Her spirits slumped along with her shoulders. Poor house. Just when she’d made a bit of progress restoring the old girl. The insurance would pay for repairs, but her mental status might be a lost cause. Spiritually, she wasn’t convinced she could start over. Even some of the shrubs and flowers she’d broken her back planting were ruined by necessity as the firemen saved the dwelling. But enough with the negative thinking. She was tired. Surely things would seem better in the morning.

Hudson pressed a box of her project information into her arms and then helped her to gather the more important items to take inside.

“Are you sure the fire was deliberate?”

Hudson didn’t answer until he’d unlocked the door and settled her inside.

“The fire chief sounded pretty convinced. Forensics will get a better handle on things in the morning when they investigate in the light of day.”

“I can’t imagine who would do this.”

“How about Warren. Did he seem angry enough to plot revenge for your not helping him?”

“I’m not sure…I don’t think so…I don’t know. He seemed desperate, waving that gun around, babbling about being in a life-or-death situation. But to burn down my house. That’s pretty extreme.”

“When I spoke with Marco earlier today, he said Warren was known to visit an illegal gambling outfit they’ve had under surveillance. If he’s involved, he’s playing with high rollers, and they don’t take IOU’s. They probably have connections in Vegas, so he truly may be in trouble with a capital T.
