Chapter Eighteen
I hadn’t told Josh, Tara or Dillon about Vin. I’d kept news of my relationship quiet in part because I didn’t want to out Vince before he was ready, but mostly because of the sheer nosiness of my friends. They knew I was saving myself for “The One”, and I wasn’t ready to be interrogated on the state of my virginity.
I also didn’t want to hear their opinions on the wisdom of teasing myself with a closeted man more than ten years my senior.
It couldn’t stay a secret forever, though. Vinnie was around me so much, people had noticed. He was practically a Full Moon morning regular, and he might have been trying to be down-low about why he was there, but nobody bought it.
One day we all stopped by the shop together, and when Dillon was ordering and Josh and Tara were in some heated discussion beside me, Sara smiled at me over the espresso machine and said, “No boyfriend today?”
Josh and Tara went stone silent, and Dillon turned around to stare open-mouthed at me, his order forgotten.
“Shit,” I swore, but the proverbial cat was out of the bag. There was no escape. They were ruthless. They blocked me into the corner and badgered me until I’d spilled the whole story.
“He’s a good guy,” I insisted when they made a face at how old he was and that he was still in the closet. “His family is amazing, which you already know—he’s a Fierro.”
“The restaurant,” Josh said, looking impressed.
Tara wasn’t so easy. “I don’t care if he’s from the fucking First Family and comes with the Good Housekeeping Seal. If he’s using you, I’ll kick his ass.”
I wished Vin could see this. Family? Hell, I had it in spades. Whoever said blood was thicker than water hadn’t met my friends.
It was Dillon who asked the question I’d been dreading. “So, have you done it yet?”
“Not that it’s any of your business, but we haven’t done anything.” I thought of how he’d come apart in my arms when I’d sucked on his nipple and blushed. “Much.”
“How come we haven’t met him then?” he challenged. “Why are you letting him keep you as his dirty little secret?”
“You haven’t met him because of how you’re acting right now.” Except I couldn’t really be mad at them. Nuts as they were, I did love how protective they were being, and I kind of wanted to hug them all. “I’ll talk to him about it, okay?”
Dillon and Josh looked mollified, but Tara still had her arms folded over her chest. “You’ve been ditching us for weeks. Do you have any idea how worried we’ve been? Dillon was all about giving you space, letting you come to us. I thought maybe your mom was bad again.”
Now I felt guilty. “She is, actually. But that’s not—” I sighed. “I didn’t mean to ditch you. I’m sorry. I don’t know what I was thinking.”
Dillon snorted. “You weren’t thinking. Not with your big head, anyway.”
Tara whacked me on the arm, and I winced.
