THERE were two gifts under the tree, wrapped in the paper they’d found tucked in the boxes of Christmas decorations. He’d refrained from poking and prodding the one that he knew was for him, though it had been tempting. He had breakfast cooking on the stove, and the fire was crackling beautifully. Evan was pleased with his efforts.

Now all he needed was Mia.

The woman fought waking up, fought it hard. He’d learned that the fun way, their first morning in bed together.

His body hardened, remembering what they’d done the night before. It had been as if she’d needed to forget what had happened back in St. Louis, and he’d been more than willing to oblige.

Now he just wanted to give her a perfect Christmas, somehow. First, he’d have to get her out of bed.

She was snuggled under the old quilts his great-grandmother and grandmother had sewn, her dark hair spread over his pillow. It was tangled from sleep—and his fingers. He loved Mia’s hair.

Evan was starting to suspect he just plain loved everything about her. But then again, Mia Ripley was just easy to love.

“Mia, honey? It’s time to open your eyes.”

Hazel eyes peeked at him. “What time is it?”

“Morning.” Evan leaned down and kissed her, getting a kick out of seeing her so warm and sleepy looking. So pretty, spread out across his bed.

Mia Ripley was his. And he was thinking of never letting her go. He wouldn’t be much of a catch, he was often moody and cranky and was gone far too damned much. But he would love her, take care of her, appreciate her for who she was.

Love didn’t have to be a flaming rush of emotion. Couldn’t be a slow-burning fire that just built and built over time?

He rather liked that analogy.

Evan didn’t know if he was in love with the woman in front of him, but he was going to take the time to find out. “Come on. Out of bed, unless you want me to join you. I can guarantee we’d never get around to breakfast. At least not until dinner. By then it would be cold and nasty.”

She wiped a hand across one eye. “It’s Christmas, isn’t it?”

“It is. And it snowed again. Take a look outside.” Evan waved a hand toward the large window. The western Kentucky hills were coated with a layer of pristine white. It looked idyllic, and he knew it. He just hoped it was enough to keep the shadows out of her eyes for a little while longer.
