Chapter Eleven

“Alex and Vanessa should be at the office,” Becca said as they pulled into the driveway of Frank’s house. “Hopefully, anyway. That way they won’t know that we’re here.”

Justin wasn’t sure that he gave a rat’s furry ass that Alex and Vanessa might know that they were here. He was on slippery ground, but Becca definitely had a right to be here.

The truth was that he had suspicions about Alex. It was all a little too coincidental to be nothing. He was pretty sure it wasn’t normal to go traipsing through a friend’s home looking for “something” after their death. Alex hadn’t been looking for photographs although he’d tried to give some sort of story about how Frank had liked to use pictures as bookmarks. Whatever. Justin wasn’t buying what Alex was selling.

Priority number one, of course, was keeping Becca safe. She didn’t seem to want to dwell on the fact that she might be in danger. He didn’t want her to be terrified; that wouldn’t be productive or healthy for her. He did want her to be aware of people and her surroundings. He wanted to make sure that he was there for her if anything happened.

She wasn’t going to be easy to convince. She’d been going it alone a long time and her nature wasn’t to accept or ask for assistance. Even now that she’d said yes to staying with him, he could easily see that she wasn’t comfortable with it.

They’d changed the key code at the house last time they were there, and it clicked open immediately when Becca entered the four-digit number.

“Where do we even start?” she said, placing her purse on the table in the foyer. “Alex obviously thought that Frank had something in the office.”

“The office is a good place to look but if I were hiding something the last place I’d put it is in my home or work office. That’s far too obvious. I’d hide it in the bathroom or maybe the kitchen. Someplace that they’d never look. Or I’d place it with objects like it - if there were objects like it.”

“Hiding in plain sight? That’s not a bad idea. You sound like you might be a sneaky guy.”

“I doubt that. I’ve just been giving this a lot of thought. Where would I hide something if I wanted to keep something safe from discovery? I was thinking my gardening shed or my spice cabinet. Hell, maybe even the trunk of my car where the spare is tucked away. I would think about places where people wouldn’t go often, if at all. The first place anyone would look is my office.”

“I have to wonder how many places they looked before they went to my home,” Becca replied. “Because Frank’s ex-wife’s house would be on the list of places people wouldn’t go often to look for things.”

Justin had been giving this a great deal of thought. Perhaps too much. He wasn’t as cynical as Grant by nature but he liked to consider himself a realist.
