Chapter 13

Hamish

“You know you have a key too, Jenner. You don’t need me to open the door for you,” I said as I walked toward the door of the room I had been staying in for the past two days.

“But it’s a surprise,” Jenner’s muffled voice carried through the door.

I rolled my eyes. “Okay.” I reached for the knob and opened the door.

On the other side stood Jenner, and next to him, Jami.

My heart leaped. A smile burst forth on my face, and I didn’t care if I looked like a buffoon.

Relief and joy flooded my veins at the sight of her. She was wearing jeans that hugged her hips perfectly and a white cotton blouse. Her hair was twisted in a thick blond braid. She seemed like the perfect model for this mountain town.

Beautiful. Fresh. Natural.

Jami was like no woman I had ever thought about kissing before, but right now, the only thing I wanted to do was cup her cheeks and pull her to my lips.

“Jami. It’s lovely to see you again.” I took a step back and waved her inside.

She seemed hesitant as she moved into the room. I was so enamored that I almost closed the door on Jenner.

“Hey. I’m here too.” Jenner grabbed the door before it slammed in his face.

“Sorry. I forgot you were there.”

Jenner chuckled. “Obviously.”

I followed Jami farther into the room. She glanced around but appeared uneasy.

Was it because of me?

“Please, have a seat.” I waved to the navy tufted couch near the large window.

She ignored me. Instead, she walked over to the window and stared at the beautiful view.

I glanced back at Jenner. “Does this mean she agreed to come work for me?”

Jenner’s smile grew, and all at once, I felt relief.

“Better,” he said.

Jami turned toward me. “I’ve agreed to marry you.”

My eyes widened. The relief I felt moments ago pivoted to excitement. Despite my happiness, there was something tickling the back of my mind. Trepidation.

It was only for two months, I reminded myself.

“Marry? Really?”

I was stunned. My mind raced, wondering what made her change her mind.

Jenner. He did get that winning look in his eyes before he left earlier. He must have known what she wanted.

That man was getting a raise.

“Yes.” Jenner caught me staring at him to continue, so he did. “We met someone down in the coffee shop. Dick.”

“Oh shit.” I rubbed my brow. “If he said anything to hurt you, I apologize. He’s not a good man.”

“Why are you apologizing? You didn’t say those things.”

I sighed and took a few steps closer to her. “You’re right. But the thought of Dick even being in the same room as you is upsetting. I won’t lie, he’s not a good man.”

“Yes, Jenner told me.”

I turned to my lawyer.

“You’d be surprised what telling the truth can do, Hamish. There was no reason to hold that information back from Jami. And I knew Dick was here and always had coffee in the afternoon. Even if Jami didn’t believe me, I knew if she met him, she’d realize why it was so important he never get the inheritance.
