DYLAN

I woke up, checked the time, and realized it was only five o’clock. Back home, it was eight. My body didn’t care that I only got six hours of sleep. My internal alarm clock was demanding I get out of bed.

I assumed Liv would sleep for a while. I took a shower and dressed casually for the day. I was planning on spoiling her. Not because she asked for it or expected it. Because I wanted to. Maybe because she didn’t ask or expect it. That was what made it exciting for me. I had a lot of money, and if I could use it to make her happy, I was going to do it. She didn’t have much and she was content with it. That was why I wanted to give her more.

I didn’t like giving ungrateful people anything. The women I dated in the past were all about what I could do for them. They could give a shit about what I wanted. They didn’t need anything—they wanted it. Liv thought she needed nothing when she really didn’t have anything.

“Shit!” I jumped back when I saw Liv standing in the living room staring out the window.

She raised an eyebrow. “Did I scare you?”

“I didn’t hear you up.”

She was wearing a pair of cutoff shorts with a flowy shirt and flat shoes. Her hair was styled up in the messy bun I was very fond of on her. It showed off her neck, a place I was particularly fond of. “I couldn’t sleep,” she said. “I was letting you sleep in.”

I smirked. “Should we get started with our day?”

“Yes.” Her eyes sparkled with excitement.

“Let’s get some breakfast, then we’ll go shopping.”

“You don’t need to take me shopping, Dylan. I know I don’t have a lot of stuff, but it’s okay. I don’t expect you to buy me a whole new wardrobe. I wouldn’t have anywhere to put it.”

“I think they have a flea market,” I said. “We should find you something to mark your first trip to California.”

That made her smile. “Now, we’re talking.”

We left the room and went downstairs to eat breakfast before heading out. We went back to the same mall. I noticed her admiring a dress, like really admiring it. I had been shopping before, but I had never thoroughly inspected every detail.

“What’s wrong with it?” I asked her when she put it back.

“Nothing.” She shrugged. “It’s beautiful.”

“Then let’s get it,” I said.

She laughed. “No. It’s way too expensive. I recognized the designer and just wanted to see what set them apart from the rest beyond the name.”

“And what was it?” I asked.

“Well, the fabric is super soft and light,” she said. “And the stitching is perfect. Obviously, the design is amazing.”

“And you’re not getting it because…?”

“Because I don’t need it,” she replied and moved on to look at another dress.

I picked up the one she put back. “We’re getting it.”

“Dylan, no,” she said.

I watched as she went through the same process again. “What’s with that one?”

“This one is not a top designer,” she said.
