Someone was calling his name. It was as if he were being yelled at from a distance. Kallum reluctantly opened his eyes, blinking as tears started to form at the corners. His eyes and jaw had been clenched so tightly he had a headache and his jaws ached. He loosened his jaw and looked around slowly. He was lying flat on his back under a dark green glowing dome, his upper body resting on something warm and soft while the rest of his body was on the ground.
Kallum sat up groggily, hitting his head on the magic bubble which rippled slightly.
“So, finally awake,” Ash said and Kallum looked around, realising he’d been lying on Ash’s lap.
“Ow,” groaned Kallum as his head protested the sudden movement. He squinted to see past the rush of energy and groaned again. “We’re still in the middle of the mist.”
“And these things keep throwing themselves at the protection dome,” Ash gasped. “I don’t think I can hold on for long.”
Kallum looked around, impressed, even as a creature with six legs and multiple eyes crashed its antlers into the dome. The dome shuddered and the magical field fluctuated but held. “That’s some strong magic you’ve got there.”
“It was either that or leave you behind and run,” Ash snapped, his voice strained. “You just folded over and I had to do something in a hurry.”
“Impressive for something you snapped up in a hurry,” Kallum said, flinching as something resembling a cross between a spider and a bear pawed at the ground outside. He could see how Ash had survived without major injury from his entanglement with the thorned vines. His magic must have come to his rescue instinctively.
“Well,” Ash snapped, “I’m running out of magic.” Kallum could see sweat rolling off his face. It probably wasn’t the case since Ash was a stronger wizard than Kallum where sheer raw magic was concerned. However, as with any amateur Ash was straining himself, pushing out when there was no need to do so and using more magic than necessary.
“I can take over,” Kallum said focusing on the dome. “Transfer the spell to me and I should be able to support this for a while.” He looked at the spell closely and tried hard not to wince. It was crudely done and the outer markers were ragged; he wanted to sweep it all away and start from scratch but if he did that they would be unprotected.
“You have to take it,” Ash gasped. “I don’t know how—”
“Here,” Kallum reached out, palms open. I should be afraid, Kallum thought, I should be worried that the spell will fail and we will be overrun by these creatures outside. But he felt surprisingly calm. It was as if he had used up all his emotions in one big breakdown and was now empty. Again.
Ash’s hands were shaking when they came up, palms coated with sweat. The strain of keeping up the magic was getting to him, Kallum realised even as he kept his hands over Ash’s, palm over palm.
