THE NIGHT WE MET BY LORD HURON

Cat

“Why are you doing this?” I whisper as we leave Grace’s office. Unsurprisingly, the meeting didn’t go great. Grace and I don’t get along. On that, we could agree. Anything else? Not gonna happen.

“Why am I doing what?” Jay asks, his eyebrows knitting together. He’s wearing a navy suit, and his blond hair is gelled perfectly in place. He looks like a robot. Not like my Jay. The one whose hair is always haphazardly styled so it falls over his eyes. The one who used to smile at me so easily. Who teased me constantly. This isn’t that man.

And maybe he never was.

“Why do you want me to date other people?” I ask when we’re alone in the elevator and headed to the ground floor.

Jay asked Grace to take me on as her new client. Her first female client. But why? What’s his motive? Is it only to help Grace? Is he really willing to watch me date other people in order to save her career?

The man is a conundrum. One moment, he’s pledging his undying love, telling me he’s been trying to come back to me for thirteen years, and the next, he’s cold and detached, angry even.

I believed the lies he sold me once, and the scars from being burned then still hurt. I need to go into this marriage with open eyes.

He raises his brow as we step off the elevator. “What did you tell Chloe about me?”

I grunt and stride for the front doors. “Nothing. I haven’t said a word about you to her yet.”

He snags my wrist, forcing me to stop. “I don’t want her to hate me.”

“She won’t hate you.” It’s not even a lie. Chloe isn’t like that. “Now tell me,” I say as the doorman ushers us out of the building, “why did you ask Grace to set me up on dates?”

When we’re on the sidewalk, Jay sighs and rubs the back of his neck. When he ducks his head, his hair falls forward slightly. It’s just enough to undo the perfection that almost moments before made him seem unhuman. As if the cold façade he’s worn all morning is slipping away before my eyes.

“You’re in danger. I told you that.” He holds out a hand, gesturing for me to slide into the waiting car ahead of him. Once he’s seated beside me, he continues. “I don’t want the Mob to know you’re the one I’ve been protecting all along. If you’re seen dating other men, and then we end up together as one of Grace’s matches, we can spin things so it looks like we just started dating.”

I close my eyes and slump back against the soft leather. I’m so tired. Emotionally and physically. “Fine.”

He squeezes my leg, but I don’t move. “No snarky comeback? No fight?” he says, a teasing tone to his voice. The man is giving me severe whiplash today.

His touch alone burns me in a way that makes me hate myself. How is it possible to hate him and yet love the feel of his hand on my body? Crave it, even.
