fifteen years later

8 welcome home

Todd steps through the gate of the Dallas, Pennsylvania, Correctional Institution. The guards close it behind him, offering no words. That’s fine because he is going to make sure he never comes back. He squints because the daylight is a painful beauty—he shivers because of the cold. She’s here about thirty feet away, standing in front of her car, head down staring at her fingernails—long black hair falling just below her shoulders, golden skin with touches of brown, and tight blue jeans with a warm-yellow hooded shirt. She looks up and notices him. With an instant smile, she breaks into a run covering those few feet like an NFL athlete and jumps into his arms. Her soft body conforms to his in an embrace that has been the object of many late night dreams. Her legs wrap around his waist. The soft kisses she wets his face with send shivers of pleasure through him. Love sensations that curl inside his heart and seep out into every nerve, electrify him all over. They hold onto each other this way for several minutes.

Todd feels the fusion of her emotions to his as she drops her legs to the ground but does not let go. She continues to hug him, and it speaks pages and pages to him of how she feels. He holds her with tears falling from the overload of joy. They cling to each other speaking without words; then the words form—“We need to talk honey. I never want you to be missing again,” says Alyssa. “It has been too long. Tell me you’re done with going to jail.”

“We’ll talk, but let me get a look at you.” Todd steps back to soak up visually what he just felt. Strands of her hair cling to his polo as they separate. His arms upon both her shoulders, he gazes upon a much older face… a woman’s face with the lines of dignity and purpose. He hopes that he looks as well, but he knows he doesn’t because of the hardened madness of his last fifteen years. He must still be acceptable though. She peers right into him with knowing eyes as he peers back into hers, which twinkle like the Pittsburgh rivers when they’re lit up at night by the lights of the city. “You look so good right now. I can’t tell you how ecstatic I am to see you. It is ecstasy for sure,” says Todd.

“Your tears say it all.” Alyssa touches one with her pointer finger just as it starts its tumble downward, wiping it away. “I want you to know something I’ve been doing, but we have to figure some things out first. Do your sisters know you are coming home?”

“They do, but I told them I would see them tonight. First, I want to spend some time with you, and get used to freedom.”

“Okay, well the drive is three hours back to Pittsburgh. So do you want to get in my brand new 2013 Toyota Avalon?”

“Any car will do.
