This punctuated and relational view of consciousness departs from the more traditional view of an egological consciousness that simply intends objects before itself. The problem with this traditional view is that it cannot explain how it is that we can be changed—more precisely, that I-consciousness itself can be altered, by the very object it supposedly intends. Mitscherling’s introduction of a natural intentionality or relationality between entities better accounts for how consciousness itself can be altered by the relations from which it extends.

. . . [T]he claim of realist phenomenology is that the act of consciousness itself consists in the mutual creation of its two poles: constitutive elements of the act itself. To speak of the ‘priority’ of one or the other, of ‘ideal’ mind or ‘material’ external world, is wrongheaded according to this realist phenomenology. But it is equally wrongheaded to deny the existence of either, or to ‘reduce’ the one to the other. Both mind and world exist, and they exist independently of each other—but they do not exist independently of the subsisting relation that gives rise to and (dialectically) maintains each of them. This subsisting relation is intentionality at work, and we find intentionality at work everywhere.[11]
