Eve

“How’s Table doing?” Mom asks as she sips on her tea.

“Crazy! It keeps getting busier.” I chuckle. “I honestly thought it would start dying down, but it’s not. Our lunch time service is nearly at the point that we’ll need to begin to take reservations.”

“For lunch?” Mom asks.

“Yep, and the bar is busier than the restaurant. Scarlett’s putting a band together with the help of Bonnie, and George’s son, Sebastian.”

“George’s son?” Mom sits back in her chair and stares at the teacup. “I thought George and his son had a strained relationship?”

“Yeah, George mentioned that earlier.” I shrug. “I don’t know what to tell you. George said his son plays the guitar and maybe he can help. George came through, because Sebastian is a really nice guy. I think he and Bonnie might have some kind of connection.”

“Oh, really. That’s exciting.” There’s a knock on the front door, forcing Mom and me to look toward it. “Are you expecting Remi?”

“Um, no, not exactly,” I reply in a strained voice. Standing, I walk over toward the front door, thankful I don’t have to hang around to explain our tense situation. I open the door to a group of women, all dressed in the same yellow t-shirt and black pants. “Hello?” Skeptically, I drag my eyes around all their smiling faces.

“Hello, are you Eve Walker?”

“Possibly.” If these people want to preach to me I’m seriously going to slam the door in their faces. I’m in no mood to hear anything they have to offer.

“We’ve been sent here to help you and your mom.”

“What?” I ask, confused. What are they talking about?

“Sarah and Lynette are here to clean.” The woman in the front points to two women in the back, who wave in sync. “Helen and Ally are here for hair and makeup.” Two younger women wave at me. “And Lisa and I are here for your full body massages. Oh, by the way, my name’s Laura. Where would you like us to set up?” She’s ready to push her way inside, but I’m still overwhelmed and confused.

“What?” I manage to repeat.

“Remi sent us.” Laura smiles broadly.

“Remi did this?” I ask. Laura nods and smiles. “Wait, what are you doing here?” Have they got the right place?

“Sarah and Lynette will clean your home. Helen and Ally will make you over and do your hair once Lisa and I give you a relaxing, full body massage.” I notice a foldable table leaning against Laura’s leg, and one against Lisa’s leg. “May we come in, please?”

“Um. Sure.” My mind hasn’t quite grasped what’s happening. I step aside for them to file in. This is where I notice one of the ladies in the back is holding a caddy with cleaning products, and the other has a vacuum and a steam mop.

“Eve, who is it?” Mom calls from the kitchen.

“Excuse me for a moment,” I say to this amazing crew of ladies. I walk into the kitchen, and stare at Mom.

“What is it?” Mom stands, and peers toward the front hall.
