* * * *

David opened his eyes. He rolled onto his back and winced at the ache stretching from the base of his neck to the base of his spine. A warm burn throbbed around his anus almost as if Alex were still inside him. Or still with him. Yet the narrow space next to him lay empty.

He needed his glasses this morning, though his vision wasn’t as bad as it would have been if he hadn’t indulged in a night of sex with Alex. He supposed a change in his hormone levels was responsible, although he couldn’t be certain until he’d gone for some professional advice. Which he’d do. Once day soon.

He found Gem in the kitchen chugging back a glass of water at the kitchen sink. “How many did I have last night?” she asked with a groan.

“How many what?”

She turned around. Her cheeks were flushed, and not with cosmetics. “Drinks.”

“None. You weren’t well. You had an early night.”

She scratched at her bed-head. “Did I?”

“Yes. You don’t remember?”

“Oh. I don’t know.” She sank into a chair at the table.

“I went out,” David said, taking a seat next to her. “With Alex.”

She frowned. “Who’s Alex?”

Oh, not again. First Kelly, now Gem? “You met him last night.”

“No, I didn’t.”

“He came here. You spoke to him. He’s my…” What? Boyfriend? Lover? No, this wasn’t the right time to come out. Not in front of a fuzzy-headed Gem. “He’s my good friend.”

She glared at him from over the top of her glass. “As opposed to what? A bad one?”

“No. Although he was slightly bad last night—” He smiled to himself.

“Right now, David, I don’t care. You go play with your invisible friend. My head is killing me. I’m going back to bed.” She refilled her glass then shuffled off to her room.

What was going on around here? Alex was in no way a forgettable person and he certainly hadn’t dreamt that Alex had spent the night—the ache in his body attested to that.

He sat at the breakfast table and munched toast until Chelsea came in her nightdress and set her bear on the table next to his plate.

“What’s this?” he asked, picking the bear up.

“I want you to have him. To protect you from nightmares.”

“I don’t have nightmares.”

“You do. Last night I heard you screaming.”

David dropped the crust, the remains of his appetite suddenly gone. His stomach shrivelled to the size of his prostate. He’d tried to keep quiet last night. He’d ached to scream out his orgasm and he’d tried to cover his face with a pillow. But Chelsea had heard him. He was a noisy bed partner. And if he couldn’t do anything about that, and he couldn’t bring Alex back here again. It wouldn’t be fair. “Thanks.” He guided the bear back to Chelsea. “But I don’t remember the dream, so I don’t need protecting. Keep him for your bad dreams.”

She raised her face. A frown made little crooked lines of her eyebrows. “I had one last night.”

He offered her a smile.
