2.1.2 Preparing for special needs

In addition to the 5 basic needs (air, food, water, shelter, and clothing) in the previous chapter, we have also included a list of secondary items that could be useful to you. Again, work on the basic items first then prepares the secondary items.

● Medicine – If you are healthy enough and do not need to rely on medicine regularly, that’s a fortunate thing. For many people, medicine is an essential part of their life. A study was conducted in early 2012 that an estimated 240 million people in United States rely on “On-The-Counter” medicines. And over 25 billion was spent on prescriptions. In order to ensure you have the needed medicines during emergency, you should start with checking your medicine cabinet and list out the types of medicine that is taken by your family. Again, set the expectations that you might not be able to get to the drugstore or medical personnel for at least 2 weeks. During any emergency situations, all the patients will be attended in the order of severity; in other words, you might not see a doctor for hours if your situation is not life threatening. It’s not coincidence that someone might be more vulnerable to illness during an emergency situation due to stress, fear, and uncertainty. Our immune system ties closely with our emotion so being prepared for any circumstances is the key.

○ Keep copies of the prescriptions – Although we found storing prescriptions using smartphone or computer can be very handy; you should also prepare a physical copy of your prescriptions in case you run out of battery on your devices.

○ Dose frequency – Check with your physician to find out if it’s OK for you to skip regular prescriptions; if yes, how many doses can you skip.

○ Store the medicine correctly – Some medicines require refrigerated or other special storage needs, make sure you stored the medicine appropriately according to the instruction. Do not take medicine that are expired or did not stored properly.

○ Watch the bill – Most insurance plans does not cover extra medications so you should budget for the additional costs.

○ Do not renew your prescriptions last minute – Always plan ahead to have your prescriptions renewed at least a month before the expiration date. About one third of patients did not take enough medicine when Hurricane Katrina struck in Sept 2005 and you wouldn’t want to be one of them!
