Architectural Matters

After our content analysis started, we saw themes related to physical issues and architectural matters emerging. This is another of our “other” classifications, so we did not include it in our total numbers for physical maltreatment, especially since it does not have a direct link to bureaucratic culture. However, we still want to note its relevance to nursing home care.

Sources from our content analysis and data from our interviews indicate that the design of many nursing homes creates problems. For example, consider room size. Even able-bodied residents sometimes cannot navigate small rooms. They end up bumping into shelves or nightstands, which results in bodily harm. Room size also causes problems for employees. Gass (2004: 93–94) explains the work limitations caused by the size of resident rooms:

We roll into her room, I reach over her shoulder to open the bathroom door ahead of us then swing my foot behind to kick the outer door closed. Entry door, bathroom door, and closet door in every room clash against each other in an architectural feud of door clanging, gouged wood veneers, and scarred varnish. The owners built five nursing homes previous to this one. I joke to Marge that they needed a lot of practice to get the architecture this wrong.
