CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Cal was alone in his bed at Number One Observatory Circle, his residence since taking office just over three years ago. The bed was comfortable, but empty and the cool of the sheets had him lying awake and staring at the ceiling.

His day had been like so many others. He’d met with a few key groups that he wanted to bring into discussions about the provision of health care in rural and inner-city areas. He’d had his security briefings then met with Anne-Marie and reviewed the current slate of proposed bills. He’d been on the go since leaving the Alexandria house—and Beni—at six that morning and it was inching close to midnight now.

And still, he couldn’t sleep.

Rising from his bed, he pulled on a robe and wandered over to the window. It was mid-April in DC and the world around him was shifting from the hibernation of winter to the reawakening of spring. The cold weather snap that had hit this week had kept the trees from unfurling their leaves but shoots of green grass were making their way through the spring mud.

He glanced back at his bed and, not for the first time, wished Beni were with him. Although, after Jess’ pointed warning, he had a new appreciation for what it would take to win her over. Truth be told, he didn’t have much to offer her other than himself—for many, that would be enough, and it might be enough for Beni, too, but he doubted it. She’d want, and she deserved, a partner. She deserved someone who could and would support her own goals and dreams. Which was exactly where he fell short.

It wasn’t that he didn’t support them—Beni was a remarkable woman, and the world was a better place because of her commitment to the life she’d chosen. The catch was, he wouldn’t always be in a position where he could support her. Jess had been right about that. If being with him meant an increased risk to either of them, then the decision would be out of his hands and his security team would take over. Even if that meant denying her a position in the FBI.

Walking to the sideboard, he poured himself a finger of whiskey and switched on the gas fireplace. Taking a seat in a wingback chair in front of the flames, he let his mind contemplate the possibility of not running for a second term. It was a drastic decision, but in some ways, it was the decision he felt he had before him—he could either have Beni or he could have a second term.

That was assuming she wanted him. He smiled at the presumption. He was fairly sure Beni felt something for him. Something more than just what they’d had . Something based on the people they were now. But she’d never been one to be swept away by feelings. She had them and, contrary to what many people thought, he knew she felt things deeply. She just kept a tight control on any outward display of them.
