All that began in the first four years of school would continue in the next three. The practices of inner and social awareness need to be continually developed and strengthened as children mature. The exercises designed to teach methods to influence feelings should become more sophisticated, of course. And developing interests and abilities will call for more expanded means of creative expression.

Eight- to eleven-year-olds are known for their enthusiasm, imagination, and relative reasonableness.53 Lantieri says “While they still have that sense of wonder about the world around them from their earlier years, they also now have the rational skills to better understand that world — and themselves.”54 Simple exercises that involve role-playing and developing scenarios are suited to this age. Self-conducted experiments in inner and social awareness should go along with keeping journals. For example, students can experiment with different meditation techniques or observe how their own and other people’s feelings toward a particular experience change over time. They can experiment with music, art, and games.

As reading and thinking skills advance, students would more directly explore the questions of life and happiness through literature, history, the arts, science, civics, economics, etc. They would begin to consider a range of philosophical and religious beliefs, particularly as they pertain to the question of happiness. This will lay the foundation for deeper exploration later on.
