Chapter 20

The discovery of the bodies had this town in shock. Mayor Russ Daigle had been riding Sheriff Riley’s back daily. He stressed that he expected some leads in this case and quickly. The local paper had been trashing the police department, calling the department inept and wondering when the FBI would be brought in.

Picou had a difficult time getting everyone to understand that it would be a long and arduous investigation. He couldn’t just pull a suspect out of thin air. He had a job to do, and he would do it, but he wanted it done right. He had no control over the press. Besides, he was a detective and not a damned public relations officer. Let someone else worry about handling the press.

At least everyone was in agreement to permit Dr. Harrison to send the remains off to be examined by a forensic anthropologist and his team. It may be their only hope to identify these poor victims.

This case had folks spooked. They saw a potential killer lurking about in every shadow. They wanted someone arrested quickly for this heinous crime.

He worried every morning that this would be the day they were called into Sheriff Riley’s office and informed the FBI had been called in. Each day that they failed to produce a viable suspect escalated the chance of this happening.

There would be no warning when it happened. No amount of begging would help once the decision was made.

Unlike other cases Detective Picou had worked on in the past, this one had him baffled. His acute investigative skills and inherent ability to unearth a clue from out of nowhere was something he was known for. This time they were dealing with a crafty killer.

Needing a break from the investigation, he called Mia, “Are you in the mood for an evening of sumptuous food, stimulating conversation and dessert in bed?”

Mia could think of nothing better, “I am on my way home. I will cook us supper so that we don’t have to go out.”

“Are you ever going to let me take you out to a restaurant?”

She laughed, “Maybe one of these days, but after spending all day in one I would rather stay at home.”

As Chad hung up with Mia, he felt his heart stretch and swell a little at the thought of Mia cooking supper for him.
