Chapter Nine

Akihiro woke up with a warm pressure lying on top of him. Isei’s warm breath fanned out against Akihiro’s flesh, sending goose bumps up and down his body. Blinking open his eyes, he grinned when he saw his sweet mate sound asleep on his chest. It was a welcome sight. Since arriving at their new keep, he’d been so busy working that he hadn’t been spending enough time with Isei. It had been weeks since he had had more than a moment to spend with his mate.

He would need to rectify that immediately.

Careful not to wake Isei, Akihiro ran his fingers through the thick waves of black hair. Shock gripped Akihiro when he pushed the short strands off Isei’s face. It used to flow down his back, now the shorter locks barely touched the man’s shoulders.

When did Isei cut his hair?

His heart stopped when he saw three light-green dots on Isei’s left cheek bone. He knew over the next few days the dots would darken until the green was vibrant and pulsing, showing everyone that looked upon Isei’s face that he was carrying Akihiro’s egg.

How could he have missed all the signs? Had he really been so wrapped up in his duties that he’d been ignoring Isei completely?

Fuck! How am I going to explain this to him?

Akihiro carefully extracted himself from the bed and covered Isei with a blanket. He paced the length of the room, trying to get his thoughts in order. Akihiro knew he was living up to his duties as the leader of his clutch, but he’d obviously let his duties as Isei’s mate slide.

When Isei groaned, Akihiro rushed to the young man’s side. He placed a hand on Isei’s slightly rounded stomach. It amazed him that his hatchling was growing inside his mate. Pride and excitement filled him.

“Good morning.” Isei smiled as he opened his cinnamon-brown eyes and stretched. “It’s good to see you.”

“I’m sorry I haven’t been around, my mate.” Akihiro ran his fingers through Isei’s hair. “My only excuse is that I’ve been working. I’ve been trying to get things in order for us and for our people.”

“I understand.”

Isei shrugged it off like it was no big deal, but Akihiro could see the hurt in his eyes. It crushed him. He felt like such a disappointment. It didn’t matter how hard he tried, Akihiro doubted that he would ever meet up to all of the expectations placed on his shoulders.

“I need to tell you something.”

“Okay.” Isei slowly sat up.

“Don’t be scared.” Akihiro held out his hand, and Isei took it. Taking a deep breath, Akihiro said, “You’re pregnant.” Isei didn’t respond the way he expected. There was no gasp of surprise, no widening of the eyes, and no shocked expression. “You knew?”

Isei nodded.

“How long have you known?”

Akihiro stood up, distancing himself from Isei. His mate had known he was carrying a hatchling and he said nothing?

“I’ve known for a little while. Tetsuo told me. You know…my one and only visitor since being locked inside this room.
