In the painful reality of dependence we experience a tiny reflection of what God, out of love, chose for himself.

Of course, this does not mean that allowing oneself to become dependent is easy or straightforward. In my own limited experience of serious illness I have discovered how hard it is to depend on others for care and love. It is painful to watch others whom you love struggle with the load of caring for you. If I can say it reverently, I have no doubt that it was not easy for Christ himself. The Lord of total power and authority chose to make himself utterly dependent. And the people to whom he handed himself over were not loving carers, but vicious, brutal men. But he went this way before us to show us the mystery of glory revealed in dependence.
