-GRACE-
Grace woke to the scent of Noah in her bed and stretched before opening her eyes. To both her relief and disappointment she found herself alone in bed, and the predawn light meant that Noah had left in the early hours. Standing up she noticed there was a note next to her bed. Opening the paper, she looked down and read the very precise handwriting.
Grace,
I am sorry I had to leave so early, I have a pretrial conference today and needed to get home and get ready. I would like to see you tonight; you could sleep over at my place if youâd like. I really find that holding you while you sleep calms a part of me that I didnât realize needed it. I know thatâs a lot, and that I may not be exactly what you expected either. Think about it and we can talk later.
-Noah-
The reluctant smile that bloomed on Graceâs face made her glad she was alone as she instantly turned red. She took some time in the shower to calm her nerves and prepared herself for the busy day ahead. Wednesdays were always the most hectic as those were the days, she often saw new patients who had just been adopted or were transferring from other clinics.
Gathering her keys and purse she made sure Bill, Ted, and Laverne all had food and water. When she arrived at her office the day was exactly was chaotic as sheâd anticipated. The day continued through Grace skipping lunch for an emergency surgery for a beloved shepherd and only ending long after the clinic had finally closed. The bells over the door jingled and had her looking up to inform the person they were closed for the day and smiling as she saw it was Noah.
âYou look as though youâve had a bit of a dayâ¦â Noahâs smile lit up and Grace shrugged out of her white lab coat before walking over and hugging him.
âI had a long one, but it was a good one if that counts for anything. No issues we couldnât figure out or fix. How was your day?â The arms around her squeezed and she looked up at Noahâs face.
âIt was productive and yet predictable, which is a good day in my business. Do you have any thoughts on bringing the pup trio to my house tonight and staying over? I can make us dinner; I noticed you donât really keep a lot of groceries.â His grin was teasing but kind.
âI donât tend to cook for myself a whole lot, youâre not wrong. I think theyâd enjoy a sleep over, and I would too. Are you a decent cook?â She murmured against his chest.
âI mean I havenât lost anyone yetâ¦â Noah tilted her chin up and claimed her lips softly, which Grace then deepened with a whimper.
Noah pulled away before resting his lips on the crown her hair. âYou donât make going slow very easy, Ms. Barlowe. One might say you exist to tempt me.â
The laugh Grace let out at his tone was surprising even to her.
