Unusual Problems with Walls

Figs 8.22–8.24 here show some unusual patterns on an internal wall. We diagnosed this problem as being caused by slight dampening from condensation where the mortar lines of the blockwork were colder than the blocks themselves. This has caused the paint to go slightly darker exactly where every mortar line was in the blockwork; you can quite clearly see the rows of blocks and the bonds between the blocks. This was a reversible process and only happened during very cold weather in this house. The residents didn’t have cavity wall insulation, although they did get it shortly after our visit. The blocks were aerated concrete blocks and the cavities were very draughty.
