Chapter Twelve

The next morning, in the Monsters’ parking lot, Raxon eyed the boxes and plastic bags piled up on the back seat of Damien’s silver car. He looked at Damien, then back to the car.

“This is your vehicle?” he demanded.

“Yeah. What’s wrong?”

“It’s no bigger than a crate.”

“I don’t need a big car to prove I’m a man. Dudes who ride bikes have this thing about power between the legs.”

“They do?” Raxon flushed. “And what is all that stuff in the car?”

“Food. Sev’s mud cake and chocolates. Gramps’d never forgive me if I didn’t bring him decadent desserts.”

“There is so much. Are we staying for longer than a day?”

“Nope. I’ve got to be back by tonight. Bas and Matt are leaving for kin business. I have to take over while they’re gone.”

“It’s their Star Chamber duty?”

“Oh, you know about that?”

Raxon nodded. Every month many of the Monsters’ team went off world to reinforce the crystals that powered the portals and protected kin worlds from infiltration. He flinched at the word, his brain pulsing with the duplicity he was forced to endure. One day it would be over.

“Okay, let’s go.”

Sighing, Raxon eased himself into the small car, surprised that the interior was bigger than it appeared from the outside. He said as much to Damien who nodded.

“I call the car, my Tardis. ‘Cos she’s bigger on the inside.” The look he gave Raxon was pained. “You’re not a sci-fi fan are you? You don’t know Star Trek or Doctor Who. Unbelievable.”

“I avoid doctors.”

“Me too. They have sharps and they love to stick ‘em in ya.”

“You have a one track mind about things being stuck inside your body.”

“Only some things, honey.” Damien grinned. “Buckle up.”

Raxon allowed Damien to fasten the belt around his body, enjoying the feel of human hands sweeping over him. “You smell nice, today. Different.” He resisted the urge to lick Damien, to taste the alluring scent.

Damien pulled back, flushing. “I’m not wearing cologne.” Their gazes locked. “Uh, we’d better go. It’s a long drive.”

Raxon settled back in the car, gripping the seat in grim death as Damien wove through the traffic, heading up into the Adelaide Hills. He glanced at Damien. He was wearing the new violet blue silk shirt and jeans he’d bought during their shopping expedition. The sales assistant had flirted with them, cajoling through various clothing choices. Rax’s own black silk shirt and jeans had been purchased in that shop, and he wore the new pair of buckle boots Damien had made for him.

The lush green trees on either side of the road slowly gave way to straggly scrub. The car turned onto a dirt track that caught every bump, jarring the occupants. Now Raxon understood the need to wear a safety belt.

“You are frightened of portal travel, but this track will break bones. Portal travel is smooth.”

Damien smiled and shrugged. The car slowed to a halt, cresting a hill. “This is it.”

Nestled in a green valley, surrounded by thick forest and scrub, Raxon saw a large red brick building with a curved green roof, nestled beside a narrow river.
