Chapter Six

Haley limped heavily next to Pete, who was clinging to Gabriel’s arm, as they all left the courthouse. He couldn’t believe that he’d had to stay in a jail cell overnight.

No matter how many questions or demands Haley had made on the ride to the Pine County Sheriff’s station, Deputy Arden Fletcher refused to talk to him. Even asking to be taken to the hospital to have his foot looked at was met with silence.

Once they made it to the station, Haley was taken into a small room and handcuffed to the chair. Fletcher left the room, and before Haley could do more than take in the mirror on one white wall and the two chairs across the table from him,two deputies whom Haley had never seen before walked into the room and sat down.

Both men were average size and weight. Both had short brown hair and lightly tanned skin. The only thing distinguishing the deputy on the left from the deputy on the right was he had brown eyes instead of blue.

“Mr. Kenyon, my name is Bill, and this is my partner, Tom,” the deputy on the left stated.

Haley had to hold back his laugh. He would bet his last dollar that Bill and Tom were not these two men’s names. But from past experience with Pine County authorities, it was best not to disagree with them.

“Bill, I would like to call my lawyer,” Haley said.

Bill took a small note pad and pen out of the front pocket of his uniform shirt. “What’s his name? I’ll make sure someone gives him a call.”

Haley told the deputy the name of his lawyer, including spelling his name, so there wouldn’t be any confusion. The deputy left, and Tom cleared his throat, bringing Haley’s attention to him.

“Can you tell me what happened over on Red Oak Road?” Tom asked.

Before Haley could answer, the door opened, and Bill came in and took his place across the table.

“Is my lawyer coming?” Haley asked.

Bill smiled. “Someone called him.”

Haley didn’t like that smile. His hand jerked at the metal handcuff encircling his wrist making the other end rattle against the metal leg of the chair it was attached to. This caused Bill’s smile to widen.

“Why did you attack your brother Howard Kenyon?” Tom asked.

“I didn’t attack Howard. He attacked me,” Haley answered.

“He looked like he might have a head injury. That tells me you attacked him,” Bill said.

“He attacked me and Pete. We had to defend ourselves,” Haley said. “I need to see a doctor. I have an injured foot.”

“Did you ask Howard to meet you there so you could attack him?” Tom asked.

“No, he was there when we got there. And he attacked us,” Haley answered.

Bill opened a file with Haley’s name typed on the tab. “It says here you have had quite a few altercations with your brother. It also states you like to pin the blame on him.”

“Where’s my lawyer?” Haley asked.

“He hasn’t arrived yet. Answer the question. Why did you attack your brother?” Tom demanded.
