Mary, 19
"I'm nineteen years old and I have one child. Her name is and she's four months old. I don't have a job now but I went to the Academy for a couple of nights of training. That was typing and I didn't get too much out of it. I really didn't enjoy it. This training was separate from this place. I didn't like the training because the teacher didn't put a lot of effort into trying to help us get some kind of training. She was just going with the flow. I paid $430.00 from July 3 to August 28."
(Q) Did you have any choice in the training?
"Yes, I could have chose different types of training, I don't think I type any better than I did before I took that course. Honestly, I don't think so because still after I take a test for something like a job, I get nervous and tense. And I don't do as well as I would usually do if I wasn't under pressure.
"I worked as a file clerk. I was only there for two days because of my pregnancy. The guy [boss] thought that I was pregnant, but it wouldn't have interfered with my work and I explained that to him. So I just left.
"I went on that interview and I was at home and he called me and told me to come in the next day. You know when you work in a office everybody gossips and talks to the women and everybody. So I went upstairs the next day and he had hired two girls, me and a heavy-set girl. So I went in that next morning, and he said he thought the one who was pregnant was the heavy-set one but couldn't see it. And he say, now that I know it's you, my boss will kill me if he found out I hired somebody who was pregnant. So that's how that went."
(Q) How much were you paid?
"Okay, for three months you get minimum wage and after three months you are eligible to get benefits and I forgot how much of a raise. If it was room for me to move up, I don't mind starting so low."
(Q) Does it bother you not to have a job?
"Well, I wanna work. Sometimes it bothers me, but sometimes it don't. It bothers me because I like to be doing something. I can't just sit. Well, my daughter she takes up a lot of that but I still like to have my own. So sure it bothers me a little bit. My daughter doesn't want for much. She doesn't need much and I don't need much. So right now it still doesn't bother me but I still wanna work and do my own. You know?"
(Q) Do you think the government should guarantee everybody a job who wants to work?
"I don't know. Let me tell you something about the government. I took the test last September for the government and they called me for a job this summer while I was going to school.
