Chapter 22:

Rallied

Harper thought she could handle things if the tasks kept coming to her one at a time. Closing the gate, meeting with Bjorn, and now finding the Ash twins all came easily to her as they came to her single file. She took comfort from Calista at her side and Ezra at her back. She trusted them and knew they were invested in her success in more than just the general continued survival sort of way that everyone in the city was.

The Ash twins would be easy to find and likely easy to sway toward unity. They were tall, muscular, handsome, and incredibly dark of skin. The logic of seeking them out first made sense as they were also well-liked and widely respected. Harper certainly thought she was on friendly terms with the Dead Watch Pike leaders as they were devout believers in Maraline and came to the temple often during resting seasons.

She spotted the twins among a small contingent of their men within the great hall. They were already in full banded black armor and adorned in the telltale purple cloaks of their mercenary band. Harper assumed at the beginning of their adventuring careers the identical twins were impossible to tell apart, but over the years they’d taken scars in different places making it clear which was which. Their heads were shaved to the scalp, displaying a three clawed slash scar from a wyvern along the right side of Romulus’s head while a crescent scar cut around the outside of Remus’s left eye from where a helmet had been smashed into his flesh. They smiled wide with their gleaming white teeth upon Harper’s approach.

“Greetings, Sword Maiden,” Romulus said. His smile never faded, showing off a few gold teeth mixed into the bunch.

“The rumors around the hall say you and one other companion secured the Last Road gate before the Cyclops could charge in,” Remus said.

“We did,” Harper replied, indicating Calista at her side.

“A necessary task, although we would’ve been glad to have your sword at the eastern gate,” Romulus said. “A dozen Fir’bolgs made a rush, hurling rocks and insults in their hacking and spitting language.”

“We met their charge with one of our own, Athol and Sven of your company joining our numbers, and we put pikes to good use in felling half the giants and sending the other half fleeing,” Remus finished the story for his brother.

“That is part of what I meant to speak with you about,” Harper said. “Bjorn is collecting mercenaries under a unified banner to defend the city as the guard and militia might not suffice.”

“He thinks this is an invasion force…?” Remus started to ask.

“Who is he expecting to lead this patchwork army?” Romulus interrupted his brother. Whereas such a move might have caused trouble between Sven and Athol, the twins immediately seemed to understand one another’s motivations, and Remus suddenly was more interested in an answer to his brother’s question than his own.

“Me, it would seem,” Harper said.

Romulus and Remus exchanged a look and a smirk before turning their attention back in unison.
