CHAPTER 9

Peter made a mental note to hire Adesh’s friend whenever he needed a security system because the U.N. had it all going on in the security department. He and Piper had gotten cornered several times, and it was only dumb luck that allowed them to get out of it, but it would be a miracle if they actually made it out of the U.N. Headquarters building, and probably another splitting of the Red Sea kind of miracle to make it out of the neighborhood without getting arrested, if they even got out of the building.

As they ran hand in hand through the corridors of international diplomacy, Peter’s phone rang. “Not a good time, Adesh,” Peter answered.

“I know, boss. I’m tracking you, remember? You’re running in circles around the U.N., and heat sensors are showing a mean security patrol closing in on you.”

Peter looked at his phone, making sure that it was working and that he had heard Adesh correctly. “Adesh has heat sensors, now,” he told Piper.

“Can he use them to guide us out of here?” Piper asked, out of breath. “I feel like we’re lab rats, running in a maze for a mad scientist.”

“Good idea,” Peter said and put the phone up to his ear, again. “Can you guide us out of here? We need an Adesh-sized miracle.”

“Oh, sure,” Adesh said, sounding excited to save them. “You should probably turn left so those three guys don’t get you.”

Peter made a sharp left down a small corridor, pulling Piper behind him.

“Are you making faces?” Adesh asked. “You need to keep making faces.”

“We’re making faces,” Peter growled. “We’re making so many damned faces that we’re going to need plastic surgery when we get out of this to get our normal faces back.”

“I don’t think you’re going to get out of this unless you go into the room on your right. No, not that right. Your other right,” Adesh told him over the phone.

Peter skidded to a stop and opened the door on the right. Piper and he ran in and closed the door behind them.

“It’s a dead end,” Piper said, breathless and obviously disappointed. “We’re stuck in a dead-end office.”

Peter clawed at his collar. “I think I’m getting hives. I have a fear of being stuck in a dead-end office. That’s why I became a spy.”

“It’s not a dead end,” Adesh insisted on the phone.

“It’s a room with no windows,” Peter assured him. “One way in and one way out.”

“There’s a secret panel under the desk,” Adesh explained.

Peter pushed the desk chair out of the way and crouched down. “I don’t see anything.”

“It’s there,” Adesh insisted. “Search the floor.”

Peter slammed his fist on the floor under the desk, and it sounded hollow. He hit the whole area and was rewarded by a soft click and then a man-sized panel in the floor opened.

“It’s a door,” Peter said.

Piper crouched down next to him. “It’s an escape hatch. I wonder whose office this is.”

“Whoever he is, he’s a genius,” Peter said with more than a little admiration.
