Brent stretched out his arm only to find the space in bed beside him empty and cold. He forced his eyes open and pushed up on his elbow.

Sunlight streamed through the tall windows on the far side of the room, and Amy sat at the antique writing desk beneath the closest one.

“What time is it?” Brent rubbed a hand over his face to clear the sleep from his brain.

“Twenty after nine.”

Brent sat up. “Seriously?”

“You needed the sleep.”

He swung his legs over the side of the bed and crossed to her. He settled his hands on her shoulders and began kneading. “What are you working on?”

“I’m doing an analysis of Gardner’s proposed changes in the SEAL teams. Ghost managed to email me the full report.”

“We’re supposed to be on vacation.”

“Only for a few more days,” Amy said. “I want this analysis in Admiral Rivera’s hands the minute I report back to work.”

“What really happened while I was gone?” Brent asked.

“I don’t want to ruin your leave by talking about it.”

“Don’t let it ruin your vacation either.”

“I’m not.”

“Amy, you’re doing an analysis when you could be exploring your parents’ new home. And not just any new home.” Brent squeezed her shoulders one last time and stepped to her side so he could see her better. “We’re in the White House. Your whole family is here. Let’s enjoy this time together.”

“I know, but I won’t have time to do this once we get back to the office.”

Brent leaned against the wall beside her. “Tell me what happened while I was gone.”

Amy sighed. “Gardner is worse than I thought.” She relayed the events at work, including the disconnected telephones and the limited access to intelligence reports.

“I’m so sorry,” Brent said. “Even I didn’t think he would stoop low enough to impact our operational readiness.”

“I’ve never been so frustrated in my life as when I got the intel on the Z-10 helicopter at the fortress and couldn’t call to tell anyone.”

Brent pushed away from the wall. “You’re the one who sent that intel?”

“Yeah. I had to call Vanessa on my cell phone and have her pass the intel to you since I didn’t have any other way to get it out.”

“When did you find it?”

“You were already midmission,” Amy said, “but if I hadn’t been taking care of Kaminski and Webb, I would have gone over that report hours earlier.”

“This guy could have gotten us killed.”

“I know.” Amy stood and slipped her arms around him as though reaffirming that he was indeed alive and here. “I had a couple restless nights waiting for word.”

“Waiting for word without a work phone or full intel access.”

“Yes.”

Brent pulled her tight. “I’m sorry.”

“I’m sorry you went in underprepared.”

“Once we report this up the chain of command, Gardner won’t be able to mess with us anymore. No one is going to stand for this kind of deliberate sabotage against our own personnel.”

“I hope you’re right,” Amy said.

“If we have to, we’ll pull your dad into it.” He pressed a kiss to her forehead.
