HE SPENT THE REST OF the day keeping his distance from Claire. Her icy silence spoke volumes anyway, and he wasn’t up for round two of their argument.

The next morning he got up early to arrange a meeting with the town’s police chief. While he couldn’t tell anyone the real reason Claire would be leaving town, Fletcher did have to brief the local police about the killer’s latest move.

“We’re paying the police chief a visit this morning,” he said by way of greeting when she stepped into the kitchen.

“I didn’t know you still planned on keeping me updated,” she said sarcastically. “I figured you’d just make the decision and shove me into the trunk of your car to get me there.”

He got up from his seat at the kitchen island. “Look, Claire—”

“Oh, never mind, I’m sure I can walk get in the car all by myself.” Frowning, she looked down at his half-empty mug of coffee. “I’ll pick up breakfast on the way. Wait...I am even still allowed to do that? Eat when I want?”

“We’re taking a police escort,” he said through gritted teeth. “So you’ll be in the back of a squad car. I’m sure the driver will have no problem waiting while you pick up breakfast.”

He sighed and said nothing more. Better to let her cool off. Fletcher couldn’t blame her for being pissed. He sure as hell wouldn’t want to be forced out of his home and away from his job if the roles were reversed. Even if it was to guarantee that a demented killer didn’t off him.

After taking one last gulp of his coffee, Fletcher walked with her outside and they got into the police car. The police escort was just another layer of security in the wake of the killer forcing his way into Claire’s car.

They stopped at a coffee shop on the way to the police station, making good time through early morning traffic. Soon enough, they were coming to a stop in the parking lot behind the station.

Quickly, he got out of the car to open the passenger door for her. As Claire stepped out, a large SUV pulled into the empty space beside them.

The dark tinted windows came down, revealing a familiar face. Officer Randolf lifted his hand to wave at Claire. “I thought that was you, Miss Carpenter.”

The frown on her face disappeared and she smiled. “Randy! I haven’t seen you in ages.”

Fletcher took the opportunity to whip out his phone and start texting the police chief.

“The department’s running me ragged. I swear they’re trying to push me into early retirement.” Officer Randolf paused, concern settling on his face. He gestured at the police car. “Everything all right, Miss Carpenter? You doing okay?”

“I’m great,” she said, her voice deceptively chipper to Fletcher’s ears. “How’s Mrs. Randolf?”

“Fine, fine. Has her hands full with the grandkids,” he said with a chuckle. “They’ve been running me more ragged than the police department. Where do these toddlers get the
