The Building and its Context

One spring day in 1987 the executive director of the local multiple sclerosis society called. The society was thinking about a new building. It was housed in three separate buildings that were not even in the same neighborhood. One held its administrative offices, the physiotherapy clinic was in another, and its storage facilities were in the third. Transportation and communication were difficult. In addition, the offices and clinic were clearly inadequate in many ways. The executive director asked me (Robert Gifford) to give a talk to a meeting of the board of directors.
