“Hi, Winston, I’m Ian.”

The sound of a deep, soothing voice washed over Winston, breaking through the darkness where he was trapped and unable to escape. Within moments, Winston was instantly transported to a place of warmth and comfort. The voice brought peace to his mind, but the fear still remained, hovering on the outskirts of his consciousness. He knew the dingy jail cell was nearby, but for the moment, he was relieved to know that he was somewhere safe. Even if it was within his own mind.

Where am I? He’d been asking himself that question over and over again. He could hear and feel but was unable to react. Winston’s hand was lifted and cradled delicately. Soft fingertips ran along his skin in a soothing motion, creating various shapes. Winston focused on the touch, staying in the present.

“I can’t believe I finally found you. I’ve been looking for you, hoping that my mate would come into my life.”

Looking for me? I’m your mate? Me?

“Will you wake up?” Ian whispered as he leaned in close. Winston felt a puff of warmth touch his cheek before Ian’s lips brushed against his skin. “Can you open your eyes? I need to see those gorgeous green globes. Please?” He begged. “Please, open your eyes for me. I need you.”

Winston could hear the pain lacing each word as Ian spoke. He wanted to reach out and comfort the stranger, but he couldn’t comply with even the simplest order.

Open your eyes.

He didn’t have control over his body. Winston fought to open his eyes, kicking and screaming, trying to get past the murky shadows that kept him in the dark. Each time he attempted to move, it felt as though a thick sludge kept pulling him down underneath a black tidal wave that swallowed him up. Winston wanted to comply. He focused all his strength and brainpower on using his eye muscles.

Open. Open. Open.

“Shhh…it’s okay, sweetheart.”

Ian ran a soothing hand up and down Winston’s arm, gently petting him. The simple comfort helped to settle his frayed nerves and racing heart. Winston tried to lean into the touch, hoping and praying that Ian wouldn’t leave him. He didn’t want to be alone. He didn’t want Ian to let go of him. It was the anchor he needed.

“Just relax. I’ll be here when you wake up.”

Winston didn’t want to go back to the cell. He didn’t want to get lost, not now that Ian had found him.
