Chapter 9

"Shh! Mia wil be trying to listen to us." Derek

tilted his head to the right as if to emphasize that Mia

was in the next cabin.

After she'd guided them to a secluded landing

spot in the shadow of the Lagrulian Mountains, Lark

locked her in the cabin they used for prisoner transport.

She had a bed, a toilet, and a sink, but no extras.

Compared to her cel on Lithusia, it was palatial. But

she'd stil whined about being locked up until Lark

wanted to gag her. He'd threatened her with the control

colar, but the horror on Derek's face made him realized

he'd crossed the line, so he laughed the suggestion off.

Likely Derek would think he'd also

overstepped the bounds of ethics with his methods for

guaranteeing their privacy, but he'd done the right thing.

"When I swept the ship for bugs after we

boarded, I sprayed her sheets with Krynaline."

Derek almost dropped the first aid kit he'd

retrieved so he could care for Lark's wound.

"What?"

Lark shrugged. "I wasn't taking any chances."

"Do you know how many people have died

from an overdose of that stuff? It's not safe. Bryant said

not to use it until they do more research."

"Then why'd he give us a bottle?"

Derek looked like he didn't want to answer, but

finaly, he said, "In case of an emergency."

"Isn't this one?"

Derek frowned as he gestured for Lark to sit on

the bed. "We didn't need to knock her out."

"I disagree, and I'm not particularly worried

about her safety."

"She may be innocent."

"And I may be a Dalvarnian dancing girl." Lark

sat. Derek took out the supplies he needed to tend to

his hand. Lark didn't want to argue. He wanted to curl

up in bed with Derek's arms around him. Why the fuck

did I agree to come here? "When we were being

pursued in the prison, Mia shot two of the guards

through the head."

Derek took Lark's wounded hand and began

unwinding the bandage. "What's your point?"

Lark flinched as Derek removed the last layer

of cloth which was stuck to the wound. "Since when do

you approve of taking kil shots if we don't have to?"

"I don't." Derek frowned, but Lark wasn't sure

if his question or the jagged cut on his hand bothered

Derek more. "How far away were they? Maybe she

didn't mean to kil them"

Why was Derek clinging to the idea that Mia

was going to help them? What had the Krax done to

him that made him that blinded by his need for revenge?

He wished Derek would share the nightmares with him.

"Would I have kiled a man by mistake? At any

distance?"

Derek shook his head. "No, but you said you

were better than she is."

"Not that much better."

Derek popped open a tube of anti-infective

ointment. Lark gritted his teeth as Derek smeared it on

his palm. He wasn't going to let himself whine even

though it hurt like hel.

"You do realize the fact that Mia and I made it

out of the prison alive, that she was even in a condition

to walk out on her own power, confirms my suspicions

that she's got an inside connection."

"Why would she kil two guards if she knew

you'd get out?"

"So you would believe her. The guards were

expendable in her mind.
