THREE YEARS BEFORE

It had started off as a bitch of a day. Last night the client who was running the kitchen had gotten himself busted for a D&D so lunch had been pizzas and Subway takeout which was going to kill their budget for the month, not to mention that Drew had to find some way to keep the idiot from being violated and sent back to the slam. In the middle of all that he got a call from a number he didn't recognize which meant it was probably another client in trouble calling him on a burner phone. Oh, crap, what kind of new mess was this?

“Guardell,” he snapped.

“We have an emergency. Get someplace where you can talk.”

Of course, Drew recognized the voice. How could he forget the man whose hands were clasped firmly around his balls?

“OK, I'm in my office,” he said a minute later.

“I need you to do something for me,” the caller said but his voice had changed. “Grab a pen and write down what I tell you.”

“Ready,” Drew said a few seconds later.

“This is the model number of a mini-bulldozer. It won't start. It's probably a dead battery. Find out what kind of battery it takes and buy one for cash. Then fill a can with extra gas or diesel or whatever it runs on. I'll tell you where it is. You get out there ASAP and fix it. Here you go . . . .” The voice rattled off the dozer's model number and a set of directions. “I need it running by three o'clock. Can you do that?”

“It's probably a standard battery size. Even if it's not as long as the voltage and amperage are within the right range I can start it with a different model number. It might not fit in the mounting brackets but it'll work to start the engine.”

“Good. He's expecting you to bring him some money — $50,000. Get out your pen. I'll tell you where to pick it up.”

“Aren't you afraid I'll steal it?” Drew asked in a sarcastic tone.

“No, you can keep it. It's only for show.”

“I don't understand.”

“The guy who's waiting there to operate the dozer has to go.”

“What?”

“You've got to take him out. As soon as you give him the bag he'll be focused on the money. When he starts going through it shoot him in the head then use the dozer to fill in the hole. Make sure he's at the bottom of it. Keep the fifty thousand for your trouble.”

“Are you out of your fucking mind?”

“We both know you've killed before.”

“One guy and I didn't shoot him down in cold blood.”

“That's not the way it seemed to me. . . . Look, this is a really bad guy. He kills people for money. You'd be doing the world a favor.”

“You mean he's killed people for you for money,” Drew said, adding two plus two and getting four. “And now he knows too much and you want him out of the way.
